grain truck won't start hot

International Loadstar 1600. 345 gas. Motor turns over fast and starts easily when cold. After running the engine to operating temperature the truck will not start after shutting off unless the motor cools back down. The starter kind of just cranks the motor a quarter of a turn, but works fine after it cools down. What's the problem?

Fashion a heat shield between the starter and the exhaust manifold. The starter may be getting too hot. We had a chevy big block once that had that problem.

After cranking for a while feel the Bat Ground cable, if hot change the place it is grounded to to another bolt. Mine was ground to a manifold bolt (rusted). Don't ask what I spent before finding this.

Mine did the same exact thing, put a new starter on and that fixed it, the starter would drag when it got hot and it acted like the battery was nearly dead, i'll tell ya this, there is one bolt or nut, can't remember which, that holds it on that will make you cuss to get it out and back in!!

And you are sure the battery is good? I had one that acted like that and it was a bad cell in the battery. Once it was hot it was all over.

If you pull it will it start normally? I would have that battery load tested and then look at the starter.

I have this phobia about shutting off a grain truck. No matter how long the wait is I will not shut off a truck until I am back at the field. I always keep them half full of fuel in case I have to wait a couple of hours.

Good chance that Starter bushings are worn out allowing it to drag when warm. Rebuild or replace the starter.

check your distributor cap for cracks. i sprayed water on mine at night and it looked like a lightning storm

Agree with notjustair; you'll have to replace the starter no matter the cause.
When you get the starter out look at it for heat damage from being too close to the exhaust. Something is causing it to drag after it heats up.

It could be a lot of things.

I would disable the ignition while cranking, if it is the same it is NOT timing. This is a quick check that does not cost any money.
