Getting bored to death watching the batch dryer!!!

I am not much use anymore for serious work but I try to help out when I can. So for the last 10 days or so I have been helping unload wagons/trucks and watching the corn dryer run.

JD Seller and his sons are running hard right now with corn harvest. The corn is still running 18-20% moisture.

The tower dryer is all automated but you have to keep an eye on the feed system on the top of the dryer. The humidity from the drying corn will cause condensation in the drop tube coming down from the grain leg. Then the corn bees wings will stick to it and plug the pipe. So I check it every hour or two when it is cold at night.

I also check the moisture and temperate of the corn coming out of the dryer just to make sure that it is working correctly. Some times I have to clean the the dryer's moisture sensor so it will read correctly.

So I am not doing much but just playing on a computer in the control room. I have a cot that I cat nap on. Microwave and frig make it actually a pretty nice job. Just boring when everything is working correctly. LOL Just waiting around for something to break.

I am used to all night work as I worked third shift for 35 years. So what do you fellows think would help breakup the boredom???

TV does not seem to like the dryer running. It gets all fuzzy. I think to many electrical motors and controls for it to work right.

This will only add to the bordom but is there any way to wrap that downspout with insulation or double wall it to eliminate that problem? Solitare?

I just finished corn this evening.

Now they have me in a storm watch, 4-7 inches of snow on Tuesday.

Ick! Not ready for that.

See a lot of big corn fields around yet, most are done or nearly so, but there is some left to go yet, that is not a good forcast. Out of the blue, at noon yet we were in a little bit of rain, light showers, forcast.

Hope you all are getting to the end, its been a long harvest season here anyhow.

I know what you are saying, boring job unless it gets exciting, but you don't really want any excitement on it!

The coop I deliver to has 2 pits and legs, early last week one of the legs chewed up some sheet metal at the top of the leg. They still don't have it fixed, been using just one dump pit all week now. At least they were through most of the beans and the big push of corn, so wasn't too much of a problem. We had gusts of wind over 40mph today, so don't think anyone was up there working!

To me television is pretty boring anyway. Give me some good books, (don't necessarily have to be fiction, technical information is fine,) and a radio that will pick up classic country or classic rock-n-roll, and I am a happy camper. BTW, you could go to Youtube music and find just about any kind of music you like.

Bring in something that needs work, start fixing that up. Reeplace bearings and seals, re-build a small pump or alternator, sandoff rust, brush on some primer, [[[ don't spray indoors, like i did late one night, the next day all the white utility trucks had a nice coat of red dust...]]]] watch the paint dry, fix one of your wife's chairs.... no end to it if you go after it.

Squd Leader ,Dangerous on two levels.
1) The wife CAN shot. LOL
2) Part of the not being able to work hard is a weak ticker. A couple of anything would be more than I could handle.

When I retired from my real job I started reading books during my spare time.
I take my book with me on trips to the Dr. and such when I think I may be just sitting around.

I use to listen to books on tape driving truck. I have a small DVD play with rechargeable batts and headphone. I still do that sometimes rather than read.

I read everything from the Grapes of Rath, No Easy Day, American Sniper, Harry Potter, To the good old westerns.

Twenty years ago you would have had to beat me to get me to read a book.

Its really opened new doors in my life, helps me work my mind, and beats the heck out of watching the crap on TV.

That's probably kinda mean, but gotta admit it made me smile some. ;)

Gotta be able to laugh at yourself sometimes.

Well KENT there where three machine running. Also the fields where flatter and larger than the ground that JD and his sons farm. They are getting 40-50K a day out of two JD 9660s and a JD 6620 side hill running the rough hill ground.

Also this is MY post not his. So be a smarta$$ somewhere else. An maybe answer some questions or problems others have on here????

Well old why did you write about JD Seller made it sound like you were working for him. if you want to belive his B S thats your problem

I thought Old Iowa wrote about Jd because there have been MANY on here asking about him. I for one appreciated hearing about JD and finding out that he was ok. Obviously Kent, you don't share that same sentiment.
