Best battery for the money

Ok, I need to get some ideas on batteries, I am fixing to purchase a battery for my tractor Ford 850 and I've never had very good luck at getting a battery that holds up, would yawl mind giving me some ideas on what would be a good battery to purchase, and as usual, Thanks for all the response

Best for the buck sure not Wal-Mart. No more pro-rating on a battery with them and if it say 2 year and it is 2 years and a day to bad so sad go buy a new one. Now days probably best way to go is if you can find a place that sells blems. I can get them for around $45 plus a core. Next best is maybe a auto parts store and then get one that is a 5 year pro-rated one but still going to cost you around $100

I took a battery I bought from Cosco, that didn't hold a charge after, 2 years or more. I didn't even have the receipt, and got a full refund. I buy all my batteries at cosco. I wonder who makes their batteries? Stan

I have gone to Rural King for several years. I put the larger heavy duty battery in my 961 dorF about four years ago. I have been real happy with the Rural King batteries.

Energizer sold at sams club
EverStart sold at wal mart
Duralast sold at auto zone
Diehard sold at sears
Kirkland Signature sold at cosco
Autocraft Gold sold at Advance Auto Parts and Discount Auto Parts
Interstate batteries

Pick one of the above based on CCA you want.
Who ever gives you the best warranty for the dollar spent is the one you want because they are all made by the same company. Johnson Controls.

I use to buy all mine at Sam's Club. Although I took one back last week that had a 3 year free replacement from my wife's van. I brought it 2years and 10 months ago. It went dead for no reason about 5 times in the last year. I thought the alternator was bad but the 92 dollar computer check at the dealership said the batt. was bad. They gave me the jack around although they did finally give me a new one. They told me everyone brings them back close too 3 years and want a new one. I told them I didn't care what others did, the warranter said 3 years and I want a new one.

i Bought an interstate 6V batt for My JD H a couple of weeks ago... I think about 100.00 Bucks, I get very good Serv. from their batts i got One in a truck I KNOW it is 12 yrs old.. really! Still doing the job... Larry KF4LKU

The other day when I bought a couple of Interstates at the local Napa store (they know me well) I told them I've heard a lot of favorable comments about Interstates but not so good comments about Napa batteries. He told me up until a couple of years ago Napa batteries were indeed not good but they've changed manufacturers and the quality has come back up. Take it for what it's worth. Jim

I've had good luck with interstates have a set of them in my 756 that are almost 5yrs old and a set in my F350 that are 4yrs old. Still going strong. I get them for cost I work for the company that hauls and makes the deliveries for Johnson Controls got a Walmart and a diehard in a 560 been there since 08 made by jci also. I'd recommend staying away from anything made by excide

+1. Rural King is much cheaper than anywhere else too. A $100-$110 battery anywhere else will be around $55-$65 at Rural King for same group # and CCA.

I have had nothing but bad luck with Walmart batteries - they simply Never Last and I will never buy anymore

I have had very good luck with batteries from Advance Auto but the cost is more towards the expensive side of the equation, but they do last quite well.

I didn't see your location but depending on your last Walmart battery purchase they may have been made by excide. Which is more than likely seeing your issues with them up until a couple years ago Walmart had 2 suppliers for batteries. Johnson Controls and Excide they where having issues with Excide batteries being delivered off of the truck put on a load tester and directly placed on the junk/warranty skid. This is the first time Walmart has ever gone to one supplier for anything

Have you considered it's you charging system that's giving you the problems? If you're using the tractor on a regular basis, say at least for 15 minutes once a week or 10 days and the battery isn't holding up I'd say you either have a poor charging system or a drain on the battery that's killing it.

Undercharging , over charging , heat and vibration are all battery killers.
I've seen operators that start the tractor and drive two minutes over to the gate. Stop the tractor, open the gate . Start the tractor , drive through. Stop the tractor , close the gate and re-re start the tractor. Then complain how slow the engine turns over. Duhhhhhhhhh.

I know they are expensive...but I have Optimas in 2 tractors and the Dodge diesel...ones in the tractors are both over 10 years old. Texas heat does not seem to hurt them like a lead acid.

I use autozone. Give them your phone number and you don't have to keep up with the receipts for the warranty. Red tops are the same battery as the yellow tops...just different warranty.

Oh, and make sure your not overcharging your battery. Here is mine in the old jeep after it was charging for who knows how long at 16 volts at idle. I bounced around pretty good week before and figure I have a short somewhere that was telling the remote voltage sensing to up the charge.

Sounded like a small bomb going off when it blew.

And add a battery disconnect to it... I've had mine last lots longer and doesn't seem to go down between long periods of non-use...

I know exactly what you mean by a small bomb I had a small one blow with me about 4' from it, it scared to the _______ out of me, I over charged it I learned a lesson that day about over charging a battery that I will likely never forget, and I always inform people charging a battery about the danger of that especially if they are not really savvy about charging batteries. I laugh about it now but sure did not the moment it happened.

Man do I know about the Texas heat I live about 30 miles Sth of Ft. Worth, in Cleburne, I still remember the summer of 1980 was working on a metal roof building a shopping center in Arlington, HOT!!!!
but, wouldn't move

Still have the original Motorcraft battery in a '02 t-bird. When it fails, it's gonna get a Deka since the manufacturing plant is a half hour away. Will try to get a blem.

Thanks for all the advice folks, I thought the warranty was out on the battery that I had (Wal-Mart battery) so I was prepared to purchase a new one but happen to see the date sticker on the battery and was just a couple of days out of the 3 year replacement and it was also a prorated battery which I found out that very few batteries are prorated any more after the free replacement warranty that's it, after all was said and done I got a nice credit towards a new battery, but I am going to put a disconnect on it.
Again, thanks for all the responce
