Farming is so much fun

I started to combine my corn and then the combine came apart inside. Got that fixed and combined 2 truck loads and then I had problems with the rear wheel assist. Got that fixed and now we have had a steady dose of snow, rain and wind. My fields are so wet that you can't walk across them.

PlEASE DON'T TELL ANYONE THAT THIS FARMING IS SO MUCH FUN OR THEY WILL ALL WANT TO JOIN US.

R I think you have got some weather coming.. thru here last night , high wind and lots of rain. Get it tied down and the boat ready. LOL

Allen, I know what you mean. Had a friend who spent his whole life as a dairy farmer. He used to tell us "People say farming is a way of life, but that"s not true. It"s a BIRTH DEFECT!" Sometimes I think he was right!

Ya,it's already here. Started raining night before last. Had an inch overnight. I didn't check this morning to see what we got during the day and overnight again but I'm guessing half an inch or better. Had a high wind warning overnight last night. Still pretty breezy and misting a nasty cold rain.

Not only is there no getting away from it, even when you think you might have escaped, the habits start to show again, sooner or later. It might be as small as a garden and minimal livestock, but sooner or later you'll want to turn some dirt over, plant something to harvest and or have some denomination of livestock for any variety of reasons, it will happen, you will find yourself doing these things LOL !

What ever rrlund sez... We got the same - just checked the can in the back yard. 1 1/2 Inches. Barnyard is a quagmire.

Had to run the DIL into Grand Rapids for a medical test this AM. Wanted her there at 6:45am.
Was an adventure with the gusty winds. Figured out how they make their appointments: They look to see who has to travel the farthest - give them the earliest appointments. We had an hour"s drive, left at 5:30am.

Everything I read is saying the days of high corn and soybeans prices is over.

So lots of folks bought high priced land, the cost of inputs, seed, fertilizer and herbicides will not go down, and the cost of machinery and parts will not go down, and fuel is still a high price.

Sounds like a money making deal I want to get back into. Not.

Located in northern NY state near the border with the "AAAA" people. Nasty place to live with all the cold weather and bad storms. Don't move here unless you can't stand people or warm weather. LOL

Perhaps for those that got in the last few years, but how about the majority that either had or bought land before prices skyrocketed? Hard assets are much better than having cash that the Fed is trying to devalue. Own land that could be sold for at least ten times what was paid; isn't even a remote consideration.

Can't be prices are going down when I said they would as a natural economic cycle about a year ago most said it was 'going to be different this time'funny thing is many always think its going to be different but it always the same.

All these comments reminded me of a man I used to work with, he knew nothing about farming and cared even less. He was telling me about a neighbor who ran a dairy. He said the man had a nice house, late model vehicles, but was all the time complaining about losing money.
He asked the man why he didn't get out of the business if he was losing that much.
The man replied, "Well, it's the only thing I've ever done, the only thing I know how to do, and I love what I do, and you just can't walk away from something like that!"

Reminds me of the first episode of The Beverly Hillbillies when Jed asked Cousin Pearl if she thought he should move. She said you're 8 miles from you nearest neighbor, your bathroom is 50 feet from your back door, you're surrounded by skunks, possums and bobcats, and you ask me if you should move?!

He thought a minute and said "yea, you're right. A man'd have to be a danged fool to give up all that.".

LOL you got that right TF. I've seen prices here as low as 3.87 here today. I knew this was going to happen and tried to tell people. But it was, as Traditional Farmer says, going to be different this time.

What's real bad is some of the locals are combining as high as 25% moisture and burning 600-700 gallons of LP a day (from the local CO-OP manager) drying it as they get ready to put it in bins.

I promise not to tell about farming being so much fun. Spent the whole day taking a broken auger in the corn dryer apart. Just so I have something to put together tomorrow. Corn over 30 percent is not so bad, it at least is yielding 2 to 3 times of the corn that dried up from drought. It is sad when the best part of the whole day was to tell the lp man he didn't need to stop all weekend. Guess make the best of a bad thing and go to the Dyersville toy show. Still a kid at heart on the farm

it could be , this would make farmin perfect .///, if someone paid for everything , and fixt everything . and when I fix sumthin I always have the rite tool to fix it without a struggle and the dum thang stazfixt .and I feel like a master mechanic ,always have plenty help when you needed help ,livestock always stays in and goes wherever you want .nuthin ever died before you sold it on the market,. you never get docked for a less than perfect product , always hit the hi market for the month ,.the winters are not to cold and the summers not to hot ,,everthin always starts and never needs tires changed ,, and it rains just enuf when you need it,, and stays nice long enuf to finish the harvest ..

I paid just under $320 a ton for feed today. I'm hoping those pigs slick it up and convert it to good, lean pork real quick before the price creeps back up again. Might go get some more on Monday.
