OT1997 chevy 454 low idle rough

ANy one have some experience? Engine has a real bad hesitation/miss from 900-1200 rpm's. Is worst when pulling something slow. Driving normal higher rpms it does not do it. Almost acts like it want to stall. It has new cap and rotor, wire, intake was just all cleaned and new gasket. Wondering where to look as it is costly for a shop to play with it, would like to try everything that I can check. Some times the 'check engine light' is on after/during, other times not. Pressure regulator and fuel filter were reaplaced about 10,000 miles ago. Engine has good compression. Starts right up
 
What code does check engine light throw? Can you disconnect Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve and see how it runs?
 
After running the same engine's as yours for over 10 years, this is a list of the items that have given me grief.
1-Gear on the bottom of distributor shaft, I have had to replace a few of them.
2-Distributor cap I have had several brand new ones that crossfired worse than the old worn out ones.
3-Crank sensor
4-Throttle position sensor
5-Injectors
Have you hooked a scanner to it?
 
EGR valve like dbNga mentioned.
Not common but I have come across a few where a tiny ball of carbon prevents the valve from seating fully.
Runs like crap.
Quick visual inspection with valve removed will confirm.
 
By the time you are done throwing parts at it you may save some money having it check out at a good shop . That being said ,new dist cap DELCO only ,,,seen too many new after market that are junk . Seen a few of these with bad injector harness/plug at injector,or under intake manifold . Had to pull intake to find last one .
 
My neighbor has a 96 that would run good for about 5 min. then barely stay running. Code said temperature sending unit. We didn"t believe it, but by gosh if it didn"t solve the problem. Still only gets an honest 8 mpg.
