What a shame,I saw this at a job I was on today, looked like the homeowner gave up on gardening and left it sit in the weeds for a long time

What a shame. I have one almost like it that my dad got in 1972 and is on its 2nd engine and 3rd or 4th transmission but still going strong. I use it every spring and some falls to till my garden. You should be a good guy and try to buy it and fix it back up since it would give you decades of service

Too bad I don't live closer, sure would like to get ahold of that! That one was built when Troybilt built them. Looks like an old Lauson or Tecumseh engine.

He probably sat and emptied that cooler after finishing fall tilling, then couldn't remember where he left the tiller.

Hate seeing them like that, being from where these were built, it was a great product by an excellent manufacturer. A lot of people around here used to call Gardenway home, well it was a good job to have, kinda like home. Older one with the yellow stickers and a tecumseh engine. I've often thought of fooling with these for re-sale, theres just enough meat left on the bone at most of the prices being asked for them, some are too much, but price the new one from MTD, it looks like they still build a model that looks the same as the old ones, gear drive etc. I remember looking on the website. Some will say BCS or other, but you just cannot beat the cost and performance of an old Troy Built, I've run one for many years in not so desirable soils, very reliable and well made product.

This year alone I have seen more of these for sale, and lots of well kept ones, this area still has a lot of these and many of their products around.

Current Model:

This design, appears to be the same or very similar, keep oil in them, service as needed, repair tine shaft or axle seals, to avoid leaks, or letting contaminants in. I'd have to think even in the toughest soils, it would take a lot to wear one out.

Taken from the link above:

"Cast-Iron Encased Bronze Gear Drive Transmission
Our tillers use a patented cast-iron encased transmission with bronze gear drive that provides so much extra strength and durability, we cover it with a limited lifetime warranty".

I have one like it and just love it.The original Tecumseh went bad but a Honda bolted right up.I have worn the tines to points at the ends and it leaks oil but it's still the best.
