2203 Dakota

Noticed when driving the trucks last night, that while on a flat road and steady on the gas, the tac would jump up and down about 500 rpm It isn't for a prolong time, just like a sec or 2. While then said that when she drove it the other day, that after she got going and ready to turn onto street that it died. Started right up. Computer Programing or maybe fuel filter?

The tach jumping sounds like the transmission shifting in and out of torque converter lockup. Perfectly normal.

If the tach went up and down while the engine maintained an even speed I would suspect a wireing connection or problem. We had a speedometer hookup problem truck drove but after warm up it stalled at stop signs. Fixed the spedo problem got speed readings and it didn't stall anymore. Computer needs to see all the readings to work. Borrow a scan too if you don't have one.

Friends 2003 did same thing, got to where it would stall frequently. Can't remember exactly, but it was computer related fix.

Dying is a separate issue probably related to the AIS motor, especially since it started right up. They can shift as described with the V-6 engine. It only takes a slight grade to "grade hunt". If the transmission shifts solidly into torque converter lock and there are no codes in the PCM, then you are probably ok on the torque converter, at least for now. Chrysler scan tools should be able to do a "kill test" on the torque converter to determine the TCC holding capability. Gerard
