Every year I hear guys talk about how good it is to have snakes around because they control the rodent popualtion. That being said I want to know why I have to buy rat and mouse poison every fall of the year. I have seen 4 and 5 foot black snakes clean out a nest of baby rabbits. I have also seen them climb trees and wipe out squirrels. No thank you , I think snakes are worthless and good for nothing. Oh well.

I have to agree. I never saw a snake I liked.
Lost a nice Basset Hound to one a few years ago. A friend saw this last summer after wheat harvest. He took a stick and got the snake away from the hawk so it could fly away.

ell.........................I had a mouse on a sticky pad outside last night when I got home but was too lazy to chunk it. Over night it turned into a Copperhead. Mouse inside. Snake stuck & tired!

That just proves my point. They go for what's easy.

I don't want any snakes as pets but I believe snakes as a whole get a bum rap. Common sense tells us they do far more good than harm. No question about them keeping rats and mice numbers in control. Seriously, how much livestock feed has snakes ruined for you over the years? On the other hand mice and rats have ruined a bunch for everyone. There is no way to know exactly how many cases of desease are directly caused by rodents but we know many are. Historicly, there has been pluages credited to rodents where thousands died in short order. I vote we give ol sneeky snake a little respect.

generally leave the non-poisonous alone, but when me & a poisonous one cross paths, I figure one of is gong to get hurt or dead & I do my best to make the outcome better for ME.

I didn't know snakes could fly. Have to watch those misplaced modifiers. Grammar lesson over. Just joking.

I found a very small milk snake one of us ran over in the drive. Very pretty markings. Snakes may startle me, but except for the poisonous ones they don't bother me.

The only good snake is a dead snake.
The first snake I saw this year was Saturday, its dead now, it wuz a small garden snake, I wood rather have mice.

The snake's reputation as a means of rodent control is overblown at least around here. This year they were barely of use from Memorial Day to Labor Day give or take a week. Otherwise the days were too cool for them to do much.
