Sears Handiman riding tractor

I have a Really nice sears handiman RT tractor with the original rear tires in great shape. Any idea what it is worth? I am looking to possibly sell it. It is close to show condition. Runs and drives really good. No attachments. Any idea what would be a fair value for this tractor? Thank you very much. William Cunningham...Mid Michigan

WOW !
Do you know when that gem was made?
I never saw one of those before. It must be from before Sears came out with the David Bradley line?

I am pretty familiar wit the DB series tractors, and I don't remember them having another name on them until they started producing the "Suburban" series, which was also manufacture by David Bradley.

Man-0-Man. Only you can say what it is worth. Take bids. That is the neatest tractor I have saw at that size. You have to hunt down more info.
It is a good thing I don't have money, or you would have all of mine.

How was the tractor purchased when new?
I have never seen any advertisments for the tractors.
It would be hard to price this gem.
Interesting to find out how many are in existance.

I'm old enough to remember when it was Sear Roebuck & Co on the building. That tractor made just a couple years after I was born.

I have talked with a few people on websites and they said between 2000 and 3000. I probably will list it for 2200 b/o just got to figure out where...Ebay??? want it to go to someone that would appreciate it like I have. One guy said for the asking price if he had the money he would be right over to pick it up as he has 2 and has more than that into either one of his. So guess that amount would be fare. As far as the other question about how it was bought, I believe I am the 4th owner. Original owner sold it to another family member which restored it...did a nice job. That family member sold it to another guy who took it to shows, who I bought it from, which he has now passed. That"s all the history I have on it. Other than it was ordered from the sears catalog in spring of 1939.

It's going to be worth whatever someone will pay for it. Old garden tractors rarely bring much at auction around here (central NY). I've got a 1936 (on steel) and a 1938 Handiman. I paid $300 for one and $150 for the other at local auctions. I would guess you'd be lucky to get over $500 at a local auction . .. but if you find a collector that is a Handiman enthusiest - who knows? Maybe a thousand or two.

Forget the best offer thing. Set your price and go from there. BO means, "I really don't think I'll get that so you set the price".I will never reply to BO as the seller really doesn't know what he wants.

I didnt think about the b/o thing that away. . I just thought it was used to indicate you were somewhat flexible on the price. I called once and looked at a truck for sale for 4500. I asked the guy if he would take 4000 he got mad and said my add didn't say best offer it said 4500. Find another truck elsewhere and went in the house. Thanks for the advise I appreciate it

"I just thought it was used to indicate you were somewhat flexible on the price."
Many people use the term to mean exactly that. Flexible.
I use it in my ads sometimes too, but I use it literally.
If I don't get my asking price in a set time, the best offer owns it.
I don't think you can lump every seller into any one group,
it's a negotiation, just like any other transaction.
What part of Michigan are you in? I'm in Ionia County.

Be careful if you choose to go the eBay route.
They will take a big chunk of your money in fees and lately
insist that you accept PayPal, which takes another big chunk
of your money. Same company double dipping.

This is a very interesting tractor. I've never seen one either. Good luck with selling it and thanks for posting.

It's easy for someone to say they'd pay the price IF they had the money - when they don't. Such statements are meaningless unless someone actually shows up with the cash.

I wouldn't be afraid of Ebay. I've sold many tractors and trucks there during the past few months and I was not forced to use Paypal, nor was I charged high fees. Just make sure you read all the rules if and when you list. They change a lot. If you don't put a reserve on the item - you must pull the sale X amount of hours before the sale's end or you are required to sell for whatever it gets bid up to. If you list with too high a reserve - it sends many potential buyers away. I've seen tractors and trucks listed with $2000 reserves that got NO bid. But when relisted with $500 or no reserves- some of those same items sold for $3000-$4000. Maybe it's a Freudian thing but it seems high reserves turn people off.

One big problem with Ebay is the trucking expenses when selling heavy items like tractors. I just sold a Bolens Ride-A-Matic on Ebay. The tractor sold for $475 and the shipping was over $500!. New York to the Chicago area. I would of made out better selling it locally for $500- except there were no takers.

jdemaris,
How do you get around the Ripoffpal requirement. the last I knew, Fleabay [u:cea5b59f87]required[/u:cea5b59f87] sellers to accept Ripoffpal and the ads all list Ripoffpal as the payment method.

They also require you to refund a purchaser's money if they return your item.
Even if they return it as a box full of no longer functioning parts. BTDT.
As long as the tracking number says it was delivered, it was returned.
The forced use of PayPal is to facilitate that refund.
The "No Returns" option only deters a few buyers from buying.
I wasn't saying not to use it, I just said be aware of the pitfalls.
I sell on eBay regularly, though I prefer to sell large items locally.

Royse,
I used to buy a lot of stuff on Fleabay (over 2000 small to medium purchases), but I got ripped on one Ripoffpal deal, and since Fleabay started requiring sellers to use it, I stopped shopping on Fleabay totally.
I removed my checking account from access to them, so could not use Ripoffpal any more, even if I wanted to.

I think you've got things backwards. Ebay prohibits
the use of Paypal to make full payment. It's only
allowed for deposits IF the seller chooses to
accept. I just listed an item for sale last night
and the current Ebay rules clearly stated that
Paypal is NOT allowed to be used for payment.

I put this diesel RV for sale last night on Ebay.
NO Paypal required. In fact, it's not even
allowed for full payment. Cash, cashiers check,
or money order only. I was asked if I wanted to
accept Paypal for deposits only and I said "yes."
I did that because I require a deposit within 24
hours.

If you sell at auction don't consign it to a local auction. Find an established auctioneer that specializes in similar collectibles.
An auctioneer that specializes in collectibles can often get two to ten times what a local consignment auctioneer can get for the same item.

JDemaris,
That must be a fairly recent change. I haven't bought anything on Fleabay for several years, but a few months ago I was looking at some items there, and Ripoffpal was still [u:ee25668400]the[/u:ee25668400] listed payment option.

Nice looking rig, too far away for me to come get though!
I took a look through your listing and compared
it to the one I posted the day before.
Seems they have changed the requirement for SOME categories.
I like the protection PayPal offers buyers, but it
is definitely not the best deal for sellers.

Hi, I recently came into one of these tractors and I was searching the Web for information and I came across this forum. I was wondering if you actually ended up selling it, what you got for it and just some general information if you wouldn't mind.
Thank you!
Sarah

Welcome to the forum Sarah!
You might want to start a new thread as many people may not
see your reply to an old post. Some will, as I did, because we
