O/T Wild Pig Hunting

I have a question(s)

How small of caliber firearm can a person use when going wild hog hunting?

Has anyone here gone hunting for them before?

I have a chance to go and need to know if I need a bigger gun.

What do you have? Have you checked with your state's game and fish folks for caliber regulations? I can tell you Arkansas' regulations, but they are not going to do you much good in another state

If you go on U tube type in ---hog hunting from helicopter--- I think there are guys that shoot those things with a .223 caliber rifle, AR style.
Looks like fun.

I use a 30-30 and aim for the ear. If possible shoot for the sow, that will slow down on the population. Don't waste your time trying to hit them in the head. Its harder than mine. Good Luck

I think a 243 would be about right. Less chance of crippling them. Although when butchering hogs at the local butcher shop a 22 between the eyes did the trick for many years. Of course that was at real close range which wouldn't apply.

I use an 223 cal AR-15 to hunt hogs with. Never had a problem stopping them with it. Usually one shot one hog.
Here in Texas no hunting license needed if you hunt them on your own property.

Killed a few tons of them. I use a 30-06 just because that's my automatic and I like to have quick follow ups in case I have multiple opportunities. My buddies have used AR .223. 6.5 and one has a grendal that have all proven to do the job. Shot placement as mentioned is the trick. I like to ear hole them or right below the ear.

My 30-06 has an advantage when we're walking the slews for them. Most times we get right on top of them and only have a running away shot. In that case I can stop the bigger hogs and quickly follow up with a kill shot. Even with the hogs I like to finish the deal as humanely as possible.

Have fun!

John B., Here in Texas! Little males up to 60lbs, little Females up to 110lbs any 223 will work, shoot to kill, to keep for meat! Anywhere above that! the same 223 will work .....Gut Shot Every Last One of Them!!! Do Not Look Back,
We Do Not shoot to Kill unless we plan to keep the meat. The rest of the time we shoot to "thin out" this ever-growing heard of destruction!!!!

I believe you will find a Browning M1919A4 suited for the task. An M2 works very well but is a little spendy to feed. What ever you decde on,take plenty amo and use all of it. They need thinning out.

Nieces boy friend saw hogzilla on game camera yesterday morning. Showed back up prepared to spend the night that afternoon. What ever you use for deer I'm sure will be fine. If it were me I would use something semiauto. Killem all.

Back in the day I believed the stories about how hard they are to kill. Didn't want them charging me after all.

Killed a lot with a 300 Win mag, way overkill, then my .270 Win & 7mm08. Got bored with that, all hit the ground hard. I then started bow hunting. Still never got charged. Had a lot run off and got tired of tracking.

I now shoot them all with a.223 shooting a 55 grain Hornady V Max bullet. Drops them with 1 shot. I've killed some big boars with a thick shoulder plate and the .223 will penetrate that.

They are getting to be prolyfic around here and the Texas Game commission has no restrictions on them. A neighbor has property along a creek and they are a problem for him....not over to me YET!

He uses a .2XX (.22X or .24X) at 150 yards and has good success with a single shot kill. Some of the guys eat them but I wouldn't. Personal choice.
