virus protection

Is there a good free virus protection available? I have used AVG free for several years and now I must pay. Which of the pay ones do you like?

After having to take the computer in and get it fixed 3 times, we bought Avira and Malwarebytes. We haven"t had a problem since. Both are about $25.00/yr.

Avira is "real time" protection and will warn you when something tries to gain access. It also will update automatically as soon as you turn on your computer.

For Malwarebytes, you have to open the application and click on update. If you haven"t updated for a while, a pop up box will appear to remind you.

hwess,

I've heard about AVG for many years, but I've never tried it. I have used, and paid for, Norton Antivirus for years and have been satisfied with it. To the best of my knowledge, I've never had a virus on any of my systems.

On the other hand, I never open any e-mails from anyone that I don't know and expect to be receiving a message from. I don't go to any of the "gaming" sites, and I certainly don't go to any of the porn sites.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but Norton has worked well for me for many years.

We still have free AVG, but are not secure. My wife picked up 4 trojans with fully updated AVG (Win 7).

Fortunately, free SuperAntiSpyware (which we also keep updated) solved the problem. It does not provide real-time protection, but solves the problem after it happens, unlike AVG which did nothing. The Professional version promises real-time protection.

We both found Avast to be problematic and uninstalled it (XP and Vista).

I have "avast!". It was recommended by the guy that I go to when I cannot fix my computer problems.

There is a free version but it did not have the features I wanted so I opted for one of he pay versions. So far so good.

I used to have Panda, it worked good for many years but then it started causing issues on my computer so I got rid of it. It was a pay product.

There are lots of good free virus detectors available Check it out here. In Bob's latest report, Microsoft Security Essentials is off the list of approved antivirus. I have AVG on one and have never paid for it. Have Comodo on another both work well. I think if you look harder, they would like you to pay but you don't have too.

I had a popup saying that I needed to update AVG so clicked it and it loaded the full version for free trial.

You can still get free version. Search for AVG free and go to it. You have to watch for it but the free option is still there. I have had good luck with it.

I removed the existing version then reloaded the free version.

I used Norton for several years and it caused multiple issues with my computer.

A couple of months ago, I removed it, installed MS Security Essentials. All of the performance issues went away and no virus/malware issues so far.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials (free) and Malware bytes paid version and everything is A ok.

I wouldn't bet the farm on MSE. Microsoft now recommends third-party anti-virus protection and quite a few of the companies that test malware programs have given MSE an "F".

Ive been using Avast free version for 10 years with out a problem. I have it on 5 computers. Works good.

Trying to make Windows secure by adding anti-virus software is kind of like the guy who tries to make a pickup truck out of an old sedan. No matter what he does to his monstrosity, it's still not a truck. If you want a secure system, you need to start with an industrial-strength operating system. Windows is not industrial-strength by a long shot. But there are plenty OS's that were designed from the ground up to be secure. Linux is but one.

I use Norton Anti virus 2013 and the paid version of Malwarebytes Antimalware. I have had no problems with this setup. The Malwarebytes subscription is a one time charge and is well worth it.
