Okay so I just bought a 400 diesel and the front grill and side panels are the two tone color scheme used on the later 450"s. This doesn"t look like a re paint. Or if it is someone did a good job. The tin looks to be original with no evidence of new paint from the past. So my question is how did she end up with two tone sheet metal was this factory or did someone a long time ago want a 450 instead?

Not factory to my knowledge. Yea some people did in fact paint the 00 series to the 50 series scheme. I've also read that when the 50 series came out some dealers painted the 00's to get them to sell. If it's a professional looking job but very old paint that's most likely what you got. Or it could be a restore with a shop applied paint job that the owner didn't know the correct colors.

The correct police will be along to tell you for sure.

Well...if it was dealer or factory, the side panels were decals...not paint.Lot of folks do not believe that.
Some dealers put them on the 400 tractors...one in my home town did with the ones that did not sell after the 450s came out.

Most likely a repaint years ago that was done by someone with some skill. You'll actually quite a few Ms and Super Ms with the red and white paint jobs too. For some reason I've never seen an H that was repainted that way.

That question comes up constantly with Olivers. 77 and 88s with white wheels. Folks swear right up and down it looks factory. They forget the green wheel and red wheel Supers came in there between the Fleetline and three digits so there's no way in the world it was factory.

There were a lot of Deere As and Bs around here with a yellow stripe down the side after the 20 series came out too.

mattsc, IH had a program to bring in "Winter Shop Work".In the late 50s/early,early 60s! To keep the shop busy during the winter months. It was a winter maintence program to do oil changes, Service, check up, and paint the accent white on the Hs, Ms, 400s. It drummed up winter shop work for the Dealership, The farmer got a Checked out, serviced tractor that had the more newer style paint scheme of the 450s and 4-560s! and his tractor Fleet looked newer too!
I have seen quite a few Ms and a hand full of Hs with a remnant of white still on the grill, and below the hood crease and gas tank seam!
Matt, Hope this helps!

My question is, what makes you think that it wasn't repainted?

It's real tough to tell the difference between "original" and a 55-year-old repaint.

The white is definitely NOT original. Correct is irrelevant. I could care less if you painted it pink, or green, or blue. It's not original, which is what you asked about.

Most 400's got the 450 paint job. back in the day Dad done both a 400 and a 300. They looked nicer with the white trim.

If I had an IHC, Oliver , or JD with paint scheme to appear newer I could easily live with it. I currently have an M with Super M decals on it but I REALLY hate to see a 9N or 2N Ford with blue or red paint anywhere. I one tome painted a TO 30 Ferguson with a silver gray engine and red hood and wheels. I was sorry until the day it was sold out of my community.

okay that works it really isn't a big deal its just something I wanted to see what id get feedback on. its a 400 so it will be going back solid red. although the red and white look nicer I would like to keep it original. I have seen h's and m's with the white color but they look weird that way to me. Hey I only paid 1000 for it. it cranks on gas and makes the switch to diesel smoothly. T.A. slips a little but might as well be gone. figured I couldn't go wrong for a grand.

matt, A running driving 400 Dsl for 1K sounds like a diamond in the rough , to Me! The paint skeam on the 400 did leave one wanting more after the 450s came out. But a 400 is a great tractor on any level none the less. Have fun hope the little bit of History I gave helps tie somethings you see together!

yeah I got exited when I first saw it with the white thought I had found a 450. but the d-264 stamped on the block and serial tag said different. thanks for the info.
