O/T Knee Surgery

Well last September I had four surgeries on my right foot, maybe some of you remember. Well it's all better now but after almost 5 months off work and favoring my right foot my left knee started to swell. Had it drained 4 times. MRI shows a stage 3 tear in the meniscus. Taking Therapy now before surgery. Doc says I'll only be off work one week minimum. Has any one else had surgery on their meniscus?

Better half had that done about a month ago. In at 6, out by 11. Turned out fine. I took the stitches out a few days later. Used a walker for a few days, but no issues. THEN, other side acts up, off and on, hurt one day way worse than the first knee ever did. Typical because of favoring one when the other hurts. Got cortisone shot, still debating about pursuing further treatment.

John B,

I had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus nearly 20 years ago. Hurt a lot for few days and then got progressively better. I never did attain full flexure on that kneee.

It's MUCH better than it was before the surgery, but I still can't squat on that knee.

Good luck. I hope you have 100% succcess.

Nothing to it. Had left knee done about 7 years ago. Was on crutches for a couple days then walking without them. Had four little incisions about a half inch long--no stitches to remove. Haven't had any problems since.

Thirteen moths ago I tore mine. Doc said he could try to fix it but that success was not likely due to the amount of arthritis in the joint. So he recommended a partial replacement which was done Dec. 3rd, and by Feb. 3rd I was back to 85% and by April 3rd 95% and now 98%.

Yes. 'Had them both done about two years apart. Both knees doing good now.

I feel for you buddy, as I know how that hurts prior to the surgery. Go get it fixed and get on with your life. You won't regret it. Funny deal......my youngest son taped a beer holder to one of my crutches to "help ease the pain" after the surgery. It worked!

My wife's oldest sister had both hip replacements
and she was in her 90's when she had the surgery and is getting along fine. She will be 96 in Dec. I think she will out live her son who is 68 weighs 450 pounds, has diabetes, impacted bowels
& needs 3 enemas daily. Hal

Had both done the meniscus was torn in one. It will take a year for the affects of walking on a down hill slope to end. If you can get the cooler with the compression deal it works great. It works by circulating a cooled fluid sort of like a heating pad with water only it will also give a slight compression. It will help the pain and relieve the stress from getting around on it. Had one done in Feb and the other done in Aug. a couple of years ago. Back to full tilt now.

I had three done in college first time they removed 60% in left knee in spring after next season they went back in and took it all, up in running for practice in a few weeks. When they did my right knee they took it all first shot. Did it in the spring and was practicing two weeks later with cortisone shots. Im only 25 tho so, might heal a little faster. Only time they bother me is when it gets cold and damp and then they ache..

Had the right knee done in April, it was a piece of cake compared to Rotator-cuff surgery. couple days with crutches and in a couple weeks, as good as new.

This is tractorhead's wife. I had my left knee meniscus surgery about 7 or 8 years ago. It hurt the 2nd day after surgery a lot and I went to physical therapy for several months, never did get full use of that knee! However it had to be fixed, because I could not sleep at night, due to the pain. Just a month ago had the right knee meniscus surgery done. Dr. said it was one of the worse tears he had ever seen. I actually put if off a long time because the first surgery did not go so well. This one was a piece of cake. I did not need any help walking even the first few days, no pain, and no physical therapy. Knee is wonderful!

Don"t know how old you are but,if you are getting up there you might be interested in my story. There is some fine print in the pre-op agreement that you, as a patient sign prior to surgery. I learned about just what it means when I went in for a repair to a badly torn meniscus and I woke up with a repair to a badly torn meniscus plus microfracture! Should this happen it will take a bit longer then a week to recover from....about eight months longer! If you don"t want to be sidelined that long talk to your doctor about it.

Been there, done that. Simple meniscotomy is not that big a deal. On my right knee I had one a year and 3 months after an attempted reattachment of the laterial meniscus and PCL/MCL reconstruction. She took out 40 pct laterial and 60 pct medial meniscus. I did 10 weeks of PT prior to surgery and 10 weeks after. On a single crutch and no driving for a week after surgery (until surgical followup). Took it easy, ice and elevation. No problems at all. Biggest thing I learned out of 6 knee surgeries is no matter what, the instant you start to come out from under anesthesia make sure you start flexing your quad muscle. If you don't it is not at all uncommon to 'forget' how to make it work. Then you have to figure out how to make it work and thats terrible. Its happened to me twice. Once in the first surgery and once after repairing a tibial plateau fracture. That took me weeks to figure out how to make it work again and until it starts to work you cant start getting better.

Had mine done a couple of years ago. They had to drain fluid off 3 times before it completely healed. Was on crutches about 3 weeks. Now it's deteriorated to the point that I most often wear an metal, hinged brace and if I have to do any walking it on crutches. Now after that horror story the rest is that the knee problems are service connected and my health care is through the VA. Right after the surgery they told me I need a new knee. I'm still waiting for it.
