O.K. Guys going west I have wore out I 40 from Ft Smith to Oklahoma City. Thinking about going west on I 20 from Dallas but do not want to go as far down as El Paso . How bad would it be to go across New Mexico on 82 from Hobbs over to Las Cruces, am I crazy?
Anything to see besides sand and desert.

That would be a nice drive that way. Pretty country around Cloudcroft, should see some deer in the mountains. Then see White Sands before going over the hump to Las Cruces. Been that way many many years ago. Tom

If your in a car/pickup it will be a nice drive. If your in a motorhome or pulling a large camper go a bit north to 380/70, I've been on that several times in my truck and it goes good.

John f One of these Ford f150 Eco Boost loves to run. We have friends a Casa Grande Arizona and always go by and check on them. Was just trying to come in to Phoenix from a different area. Thanks for the answer looks like we will be heading that way Tuesday morning.

I've travelled that area many times and if you want to get to Cruces fastest without going to El paso, your best bet is to take I-20 to Sweetwater, then 84 to Post and 380 to Roswell and then 70 from the Hondo valley to Las Cruces. 380/70 west from Roswell is now a 4 lane to Ruidoso.

I haven't taken the Hobbs to Alamogordo route since the '70s, so can"t comment on it, except Cloudcroft area is nice. Either way, from west TX till the Rocky's is hills and cactus.

Oh, on 84 between Sweetwater and Post, there must be a thousand generator windmills. Quite the sight.

What I'd like to know is who put up that 45 mph speed limit between the big mountain at Alamagardo and the road due East, forget the number and the town on the Texas end. Here you are out in the middle of nowhere, not a soul or habitat in sight, relatively flat land, straight road, and a 45 mph speed limit and it went on for miles and miles.

You don't think that was a speed trap do you? Naw. They wouldn't do that.

Mark

Years ago we visited a nice space center(?) in Alamogordo. Don't remember any 45 mph speed limit between there and Hobbs, maybe it has changed. Mostly sagebrush and cactus until you get into the mountains east of Alamogordo.
