found leak in Goldstar dehumidifier

I had to use the Baptist approach to find leak in evaporator, total submersion. The set of 2 coils on the right are the evaporator coils. Almost every elbow on the one side of the evaporator had many tiny pin hole leaks. The metal frame work is rusty too. The copper elbows look like someone poured acid on them. The elbows on the other end of the evaporator look normal.

Thinking the dehumidifier may be having funeral services real soon, then a trip to the recyclers.

BTW, this was a 134A system.

I have an antique dehumidifier that is about 40 years old, R12, never had freon added. Go figure, cheap copper.

Hello George Marsh,

Those things just go south quick anymore. I too have an R12 unit still collecting water out of thin air!
NOW>>>>>> if you only had a refrigerant recycling card you would be able to junk it! HA! HA!,
I can loan you one of mine cards?,

Guido.

Guido,
No need. I'm good friends with a man who is in the business. The last AC I scrapped, he sucked out the R22 and reused it. He told me the recyclers require you to show a business card before they buy used AC parts to keep theifs from selling stolen copper.
Thanks,
George

Worked in an air conditioning factory. That"s the way we tested them - immersion. Had a rack where we pressurized them with compressed air, and they were then lowered in a tank of water. Any bubbles were cause for rejection. I don"t know where rejects went, probably back to repair bay for extra attention. Only worked at that station for a few days, and was moved to final inspection.

When I repaired window AC's, I would remove all electrical controls, motors and put them in a swimming pool to find the really hard leaks. This is the first time I found multiple leaks at the bends that weren't the soldered ends.

Wish I had some dryer and the hi-tec glue to put in the unit, but it is way too costly. Never used it, but this would be a real good test subject.

Where are you at ? Do you repair dehumidifiers ? I have several old ones that finally quit.I'd like to spend the money to fix them.

These new ones are all from China and I'm lucky if they last a year or 2. Last one made it a year and a half. I was able to get store credit back on it.

That's nice to know.

If you look at the second row of coils on the evaporator, that's the set on the right side, there is a lot of rust. Makes me think someone at the factory may have poured acid on them. I've never seen so many tiny pin holes. They really didn't show up with soap bubbles like they did under water.
