JD Dealer not open today?

When I had a job I looked forward to these government designed days off but when I retired and started farming I find them to be a royal pain. I called for a tractor part but no one answered the phone and I then called a trucker to make sure he was ready to haul my corn next week but again, no answer. But then I woke up, today is a holiday and everything is on hold.
I know the malls are going to be full of shoppers as will all the places where people go to play. But for me there is nothing going on since everyday is mine to use as I please..almost.
I wonder if any other farmers or retired persons find these banker holidays more of a bother than a pleasure. Now, before someone condemns me for not recognizing that the business workers need time off let me say that I did have a job for many years and did look forward to time off and do see the need. I am just gripping now because I can. LOL

me too... lost count how many time that i've phoned for parts on either a sunday or holiday monday and got no answer (surprisingly)... it's only after i call i realise it's a day off for "normal" people... it it a pain in the (insert word of choice here).

I work at an implement dealer and planting and harvest time we are open 7 days a week for the duration. We generally take veteran's day off to make up for the days worked when others were off. Some farmers complain about that. Bottom line is you can't please everyone.

I was just at my nearest Deere dealer and they were open. I have never heard of a machinery dealer closed for Columbus Day so something else may have happened. Maybe your dealer's phone system is out. My dealer's parts department was very busy because it rained today. The phones were ringing off the hook. On days like this it would be nice if the dealer had double the personnel on duty in parts. Call your dealer back and I believe you will find he is open barring something such as an emergency there or a death or accident.

Is it a garden tractor dealership?

This time of year there are no off days for any of the ag dealerships, harvest and planting they run full tilt.

I have NEVER had Columbus day off at any of the dealerships I have worked at. Truck, car, tractor now stumpgrinder and chippers we were always open.
Maybe they are so busy they can't get to the phone or the phone broke ?

????? Can't imagine !

All my years in Farm Equipment and Auto Dealership parts we were never off on Columbus Day !

Remember being Stopped one snowy morning on way to auto dealership when roads were closed to "essential traffic" only. Deputy said why are you on the road. I said a lot of snow plow trucks and emergency vehicles are Fords and I want to be at Dealership if anyone needs parts. He waved me on.

Don't know. Needed some welding rod and the auto parts store was open. The road crew was working on the streets in town.

You're not a Canadian, eh? It's Thanksgiving Monday here and nothing's open. I'm digesting my Thanksgiving dinner right now instead of working. We have Thanksgiving now instead of November because we might be snowed in then!

I work for a state university and we're open today. My son's public elementary school is open too. I didn't know that anybody got Columbus Day off except the post office.

I haven't gotten Columbus Day off since high school. They even make you go to class in college on Columbus Day. All the jobs I've ever had don't celebrate it either.

We do get MLK Day off at this job, but that's because it's between Christmas and Memorial Day. There are holidays every couple months the rest of the year, but it's almost 5 months straight without a holiday if you don't count MLK day.

Kinda like one Memorial day when I was working at a fertilizer/seed warehouse. One of the new guys asked the boss if he could have the day off, boss said "if the farmers are working we're working." The guy also worked in the feed division so he went down and asked the boss there for the day off and that boss said yes. He didn't show up at the fertilizer plant on Memorial day, and when he showed up the following monday, the boss told him to go home and get his uniform and bring it in because he was all done.

Back in 99 I had 2 days off for Columbus Day, plus 2 more. Was hauling electronics components to so Tex border, jockeys pulled across to Mex & brought finished goods back to us. 13 company drivers started arriving on Fri, I got there Sun. Mon, the 11th, was holiday in Tex, so nothing moved. Tue, the 12th, was holiday in Mex, so nothing moved then either. Loads started coming across on Wed, I had to wait til Fri to get a load & start rolling again. Didn't earn much that week, but company paid 40 bucks a day after sitting 24 hours. That covered meal expence anyway.

Well, someday soon, an expert will say a pre-historic African explorer discovered America, and everything WILL close for the day, and people will wish they did something besides get irritated on Columbus Day.
Hey if you figure the Spanish and Italian sailors who hit the beach that day in 1492 were mostly commissioned or enlisted in the 'Armada Espania', we could make this 'ancient armed services day'. Everyone loves military holidays!
When everyone goes to work on labor Day, then you know the American Labor Unions mean nothing anymore.
People had better keep celebrating or publicly remembering small holidays, like muscles, don't use it- you lose it...
Until those pressure cookers went off at the marathon, the people of Massachusetts were starting to shrug off Patriot's Day. I think that changed....
