Harvesting beans done in two days

The neighbor came in and harvested my 'little' 270 acres of beans in a couple of days. I still can't get over how good a job a 40' head can do at shaving them off across the entire width of the head. The stubble is no taller than 1 1/2". They yielded all the way from 37 bushels on my sandy ground to 45 on better ground, not a bin buster but respectable for the way the weather treated us last summer. Jim

A flex head (not FCB) will do that, no matter the width. But yes, I marvel at a head that wide, especially the auger......considering the stress at the middle. I don"t farm much anymore, rent out most acres, but did update a few years ago to a flex on my M2....had to update the wiring and control module to control the flex, vs simpler header height control. My renter cuts 35 feet per pass, I do 15, but I can shave the field equally as well as the "big boys".

Had a FCB for decades, sometimes with robot, but usually ran it manually. Total joy now punching the hdr down button for 2 secs, it finds the ground, and stays there til I get to the other end of the field. Not bad for a 32 year old updated combine.

That's the Claas way...

It's funny how nobody seems to think a big head can follow the ground contours... until they see it done. Most around here can't conceive of a head bigger than about 15' for the same reason. Truth is... 35' would work just as well if they'd knock down their stupid gate posts, cut some trees out of the way and run a land leveler over the field once and a while. Auger flex heads can handle a lot and a draper will handle more...

Your comment about cutting trees out of the way......bought the second of three farms in "82, next year I removed a lone tree in a field cuz my 24 foot field cultivator couldn"t get between it and the edge of the field. PO said., "I don"t know why my dad never did that"! I thought, Clem, you were raised here, then you farmed here, for 40 years.....why didn"t YOU ever do that!

We're all guilty... we've got farms where a couple of days with a dozer and wheel loader would clean up a lot of stupid stone piles and square up some other tree lines, etc... but it's like everything else... there's always something else that needs done. I've got a couple of pieces that would easily free up 2-3 acres by burning the old house/barn, trees and burying the remains... mabey this fall. LOL
