Lost a neighbor

Lost an 81 year old neighbor yesterday afternoon. He was headed home from the grain elevator in town one mile away with a tractor and two empty wagons. East bound on the pavement he was making a left turn to head up the gravel road to his home a half mile up the road. According to the ISP a loaded, east bound, semi tried to pass him. Semi hit the tractor and first wagon, pushed them into the NE corner of the intersection and down in the ditch. The tractor tipped on it's side and the cab top struck and broke a utility pole. Semi driver was not injured, My Neighbor was killed.
It is a sad day in our community.

Bad deal!

A lot of tractors out here on the state road with a coupla wagons as well as a lot of semi's loaded with beans and corn. Added slow downs for the commercial carriers to bring up their stress level. Lots of close calls around here during fall harvest. Just gotta keep the fingers crossed.

Very sad.
Was the truck driver charged with manslaughter?
Sounds like it was the truckers fault.
I have seen a few bad wrecks in my time, but never with a tractor.

Were the turn signals on the wagon and did ne look in the mirror. See tractor drivers too many times no lites no signals driving at sundown without lites. I drove from combines many yrs and the driver needs to be aware of where and what is happening no fun too bad.

I agree with you.

However.

In my state, the law is you slow down to the speed of the tractor, then pull out and accelerate to pass it.

The goal was to prevent accidents like this.

No one follows that law, but it is there in the books, if you kill someone by running them down and not passing carefully....

Myself, I had a gravel semi and a year latter a plumbing van pass me on the road shoulder at the top of a hill. Just blew past me with very little room on a narrow shoulder on the side I don't watch - no reason to.

That gets a persons attention, and brings a few terms to mind.....

How can you say it was the truck drivers fault without knowing all the details? It is very sad the the farmer was killed but at 81 years old, it's also highly possible he had no turn signals and didn't check for traffic behind him before he turned left. Trying to stop a loaded semi in a split second, it might as well been a train.

When I was a kid, a local merchant was involved in an accident in town. He was turning into his driveway to go home for lunch, when an out-of-state driver coming the opposite direction hit his car.

"I've been turning here and coming home for lunch every day for 38 years," he said. "Everybody should know that by now."

Yeah...except that unfortunate out-of-towner.

In the case of the farmer, we don't know all the details, so it's presumptuous to assign blame without knowing all the facts.
