When is the best time to transplant raspberries in northern climates [Minnesota], fall or spring? I have heard both seasons. I was thinking of cutting them back this fall covering them with straw and transplanting in the spring. How do you guys from the northern climates split the plants? Thanks Dale

They are tough plants. I think doing it now (with a good sized root ball of undisturbed soil) would be best for its spring revival. Fruit is found on second year canes, so you might not get much productivity in 2014. My issue is keeping them localized. Underground roots have found their way under 3 feet of sidewalk and sprouted new canes. Either way will sure work. Jim

I wasn't watching my Black Raspberries very close
so last fall, a lot of them bent over, touched
the ground, and rooted. I clipped them off, dug the rooted part, and transplanted. ALL grew, and
my Raspberry bed is twice as large now. I did it
October 2012. I've got more to do this year.
