This is what Dad used to move dirt around the place. I have a lot of hours standing on that thing. It went down fairly easy, but raising it full of dirt was a little harder. Still sits where dad parked it 35 years or more ago.Stan

I have one you walk behind like a wheelbarrow and lift the handle to dump. Dad used it with a team of horses to dig basement of his house.

My Granddad used one of those and a garbage truck to dig the basement under his house. Used a garbage truck 'cause that's all he had, wasn't farming so we didn't have any tractors.

I believe that the unit 37 Chief has was called a "Pan Scraper"; and the one that you have that is walk-behind with the handles is called a "Fresno Scraper". The Fresno Scraper was a dangerous unit to use if you weren't careful, because if it hit a large buried rock, the bucket would suddenly pitch forward causing the handles to raise suddenly. Numerous people have been knocked unconscious when the handle came up suddenly, striking them in the head.

Basement of our house was dug with one of those, walk behind. Never really saw one exactly like the one in this thread, with the platform and wheels. Same idea, but too fancy for around here I guess. ;)

That is what is called a Fresno it was developed to built the levies in the Delta region in CA.
A lot of lAter ones of different design are call Fresnos but you had the original. They as big as a car and pulled by 8 or more horses. It took 10 Chinamen to hold the arms down, when it hit a large root there were chinamen flying in all directions as it not considered correct by them to let go of the handle every time it hit something
