Price per Pound Beef Hanging

I hauled one to the slaughter house Monday, got $1.22 live weight for a nice grain fed Angus. Multiply by 220% and that comes to 2.68 hanging and they pay all the expenses.

a friend sells for 2.00 on the hook, customer then pays processing ,at 40.00 kill fee, plus .70 cents a pound.. to my way of thinking that about puts it out of reach for most families.

He's cheating himself at $2.00 hanging. Here's what they brought at the sale barn here Monday. Don't know about you,but I'm not running a charity. I won't sell for less than they'll bring in the ring.

I'm selling mine at $500 a quarter, I pay the processing. Figure the steer weighs 1200 at $1.25 minus the $400 processing and I'm right at market. Thing to remember is this: try to buy the equivalent amount and cuts from a meat counter and my $500 a quarter blows the doors off of them. Heck rib eyes are $7/lb here, roasts right at or over $4/lb. Even 85% burger is running close to or over $3. $500 a quarter at 125 lbs is $4/lb, and I bet this steer cuts more than 125 finished a quarter. Trick is, finding $500 at once in the budget to spend.

You are still getting the weenie. Look at the price of production increases in the last 10 years and where beef prices are and they are no way near in range.

I have been getting $3/pound (hanging weight) and I pay all the processing cost. That is cheaper for them and I don't do bad either.

1400 Lbs. x 58% = 812 x $3 = $2436

$2436 - $650(processing cost)= $1786

$1786/1400 = $1.27 live weight.

They pay for any special packaging, like patties, smoked sausage, etc.

So I make fair money but not that much better than the market.

My point Mr. Seller is what did it cost you to make that $127 cwt live weight in today's market? Back when Fert was under $200/ton feeder steers were bringing 85 cents. Today with fert around 3x that and diesel 3x what it was then, beef is only up half a point.

Just the little guy getting $crewed as usual.

Texasmark1: It costs me right around $.90 per lbs to put the weight on the calf. So you have to buy the calf right or you will not make anything. Right now you can clear about $100-125 per head. That is giving yourself market value for the feed.

My boys and I argue about that some. I tell them they can still gain even if they are just getting the market price for their crops. How is that?? Well the easiest is the value of the manure. I buy very little extra fertilizer. Also I feed a lot of forages that are cheap gain for cattle. Then I also feed high moisture corn that does not have to be dried.

So all in all I can make money feeding cattle if the calf prices are reasonable. The trouble is that they are way out of reason right now.
