OT---What did I do to my JD Zero Turn?

I was mowing yesterday with my John Deere 445 zero turn (25 hp Kawasaki) when the front of the deck caught a hidden tree root. I was moving at a fairly good clip, but came to a sudden stop when I hit the root. Deck and blades are OK, but the engine immediately began surging and losing power. It will barely keep running when I throttle down to idle.

I'm not much of a mechanic, so I plan to take it in to the dealer, but I'm just curious as to what I might have jarred loose. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sorry about your mishap.
Do not know your mower at all but had a spring come loose in the governor assembly of the air cooled engine of my mower, causing similar effects.
Was caused by my son's football hitting the mower :-(

I agree with Bryan had a similar thing with my 2n cleaned the carb and problem solved.

I'm with Olddog- an abrupt stop to the blade can bend the key just enough to put it out of time, but not shear it off completely.

Mike, blades were unaffected; they never stopped whirling. Root had the same effect as running into the tree itself----sudden stop.

I'd still think about the key. A sudden stop is going to be a shock to the hydro system and could still quick stall the motor causing the flywheel key to shear on inertia.
