Sunflowers picked and drying...

All of this from one saved sunflower head from last year. Quite pleased with the crop. I have them drying on an 8' garden fence section I made sitting on two sawhorses. The plan is to let them dry until the seeds are ready to fall out, then to save some seeds for next year and feed the rest out to the critters over winter, I guess.

Usually the birds have picked half of them clean by now, but for some reason they steered clear of 'em. Heck, even the deer left my pumpkins alone.

We have had very few birds and bees around here this year. We had a problem in the garden getting any fruit to set. No pollination.

Same here, not sure whats going on with the honeybees, hardly a one around the gardens, going back to when the apples and fruit trees were in bloom. However, there was no shortage of bumble bees. They seem to make up for the lack of honeybees, apricots, pears and even an apple tree that has not produced a lot over the years, all had quite a bit of fruit, same with the garden. I found nearby nest, it was under where some firewood fell off my stack, when I was cleaning up, I had been standing on their front door and one let me know about it, buzzed me, then landed on my shoulder, never stung me, though I pulled on my shirt quickly to flick it off, once I saw it. Uneasy feeling, but now that I know where they are, and how beneficial these are in the absence of honeybees, I'll leave em be and protect the nest if possible, at least there is a back up bee LOL !

We"ve barely seen a honeybee this summer, but are blessed with an abundance of Bumblebees. On cool
mornings, now, we find them sleeping in/on flowers
and you can touch them...the only Bee that you can
pat!
