Starting problems 2440 diesel

I continue to have starting problems on my tractor a JD 2440 diesel. What I have done to try to correct the problem.

1. Two fresh batteries.

2. Had the starter rebuilt

3. Grounded the battery directly to the starter
bolt.

It normally will start cold with no problem but when it is running for a while and reaches normal temp and I shut it down and try to restart it will not turn over fast enough to start.

If I close the hydraulic shut off one turn then it will start no problem. This leads me to to think I have a hydraulic problem. Will the hydraulic pump going bad cause the hard starting? This is with no load on the hyd. other than the power steering. Thanks for any help.

There are many places that cause a small internal hydraulic leak that will never bother anything except hot-starting. It only takes a tiny flow to cause the pump to go into "pump" stroke and cause hard cranking. If it IS the pump, it's likely just the stroke-control valve that you can change without removing the pump. If the problem is a leak on the tractor, my first suspect would be the steering. There are 6 o-rings in there that were leak-prone in early machines. Part # L34451 as I recall.

Stroke-control valve part # depends if you have the tiny 1.3 German pump, 2.4 USA pump, or 2.4 metric pump. All three were used on 2440s.

That tractor is old enough for me to tell you that you may have a set of cables going bad. You can't see it, but they will corrode under the connectors, and heat may add to the resistance in them. Take an ohm meter, and go from the end to the cab;e, from the post to the cable, end to end, etc., and see if there is any amount of resistance. If there is any, try having a new set of cables built and put them on. Bet you'll see a great improvement.

On those tractors and new generation tractors if you work the steering wheel back and forth fast as you crank it,it relieves hydraulic pressure so you don't need to shut the hydraulic off.My 1020 starts a lot easier when I do this.

DonJr is likely on the right track. All new 2/00 cable is not expensive.
As for wiggling the steering wheel. That"s a pretty chinsy looking and less effective activity then splurging a whole $15 on a destroker.

Here's a parts schematic of the larger(2.4 in.3) pump. Destroking screw is parts key #6

You hot start and hyd. shut off does lead me to believe you have a hyd. internal leak somewhere.
I'm not that up on these "NEW" tractors. LOL

Now having said that I went thru a time with my uncles 2640 not wanting to start good cold. And not even cold cold as it was inside and above freezing temps or warmer.
His rebuilt starter ended up haveing a bad armature and it was not spinning fast enough.

Thanks for the help on my starting problem, when I get it solved I will let you guys know what I found.

I had a similar problem with my 1755 - wouldn't turn over fast enough to start when hot. Replaced the batteries and got the starter rebuilt with no luck. Turned out to the crimp on the frame end of the ground cable - it looked ok, but was a high resistance connection. Replaced all cables with 2/0. Works great
Good luck
Pete
