Going to Dallas / Ft. Worth for 1st time!

Going to spend 6 days / 5 nights at DFW. October 8th through the 13th. Planning on the Texas State Fair, Aircraft Owners, & Pilots Association Aviation Summit, & the Texas railway Museum North of Dallas. & of course Cow Town on the north end of Ft. Worth.

Anybody know of any... *Cant Miss Eating Establishments*? Anything else is welcome too I guess.

The Mesquite Pit in Weatherford, Texas, is a good place for BBQ, steaks, etc. Here is there contact info:

Campo Verde in Arlington for Mexican and American food. My in-laws lived in Arlington for 29 years. We went there every time we were in town. Very friendly staff. The manager is often out waiting on customers, delivering food, cleaning tables, anything that needs done. Food is good and plentiful at a reasonable price. The place is always decorated up a lot. Even has a scale train running around the dining area. We have often seen Rangers baseball players or Cowboys football players eating there so it must be good.

We really liked the food truck park in Ft Worth, fwfoodpark dot com, I think. Quite a variety of gourmet food, reasonable prices. Toughest part was finding the park, then deciding what to order wasn't easy either.

My Dallas suggestions are;

Well, if you like Tex-Mex and you're over by the fair park area anyway, try a lunch over in deep ellum on Elm St. at Pepe's and Mito's. My suggestion is chicken enchiladas in mole sauce.

If you want some german food and some good cake or pies drive up to Blackwell St. right behind the half priced books and try Henk's European Deli. After your wienerschnitzel go get a piece of their german chocolate cake, but make sure you have a place to rest afterwards.

If you like greek, get on Greenville Avenue and stop at Kostas Cafe Greek Cuisine. Try they gyro plate, the meat pretty much melts in your mouth.

If you want some just good home cookin', Mama's Daughter's Diner on Irving Blvd. What you get depends on the day. It's all good.

Now if your back over in Fort Worth Joe T. Garcia's is worth the stop and some great Tex-Mex. It's on Commerce St. right by the stock yards. They make a great margarita!

If you want a buffalo porter house that is cooked to perfection try the Reata on Houston St. You have to call to make an appointment and be ready to spend about $75 for two people. We did that for an anniversary gift to ourselves last year. It was a fun experience. Even the salad was worth talking about.

Another good Tex-Mex is Uncle Julio's on I-30 and Camp Bowie.

Our favorite Tex-Mex is Frisca's down in Burleson though. Right next to Babe's which is great but Frisca's slow cooks their own brisket and incorporates it into allot of their dishes. They smoke their own peppers for their salsa too and if you can walk out of there you doing good. My all time favorite!

These are my favorites and I'm pretty sure if you eat at any of them, you won't be disappointed.

Deere Scotty, Welcome to Texas! If you are near Stephenville, Coppell, or Roanoak.... Hard Eight BBQ The Pork Chop is great over a 1lb, The Jalapeno Poppers area must either chicken or shrimp!
Uncle Julio's in Ft Worth, has been a main stay in Tex-Mex, Mexican Food for years, IMO you can't go too wrong most any where.
At Our State Fair, The Funnel Cakes... A must for any Fair attendee. Most any Fair food that is Fried! Be prepared to gain a few lbs. LOL!
Have Fun, Proud to have you Visit for a while!
Later,
John A.

To bad your not going to be in Texas a week earlier.
The largest Texas tractor show is in Temple TX south of Dallas from the 4th thru the 6th of Oct, it is really a great show with a great Board of Directors running the show.
Enjoy Texas no matter where you may go.

And now the bad news.
Be aware of the cops in Arlington,Irving and Grapevine. They love to write tickets. Fort Worth cops are ok for the most part.

The 820 loop around north Ft Worth is a night mare during rush hour. Go north a little bit and take 114 to Dallas. It will take you to the George Bush toll road. Which will take you to the North Dallas tollway. Which will take you to Frisco. Where the train park is.

The stock yards in Ft Worth is worth the visit. When you see the pens that are left. Just add about ten times that amount. To understand what they use to be like.

Avoid 635,75 and anything with a major highway during rush hour. They turn in to parking lots.

We Also have El Fenix and El Chico. Both family owned chain resturants. Food is not bad and service is good.

Where you are staying twenty years ago. Was an out in the country cow pasture.

My advise would be to avoid Dallas except for the State Fair and the Air Museum in Addison. Dallas is not a good example of Texas. As someone once said, Go West.
For BBQ go to the Railhead on Montgomery near I30.
I live in Weatherford, but The Mesquite Pit is not as good as it used to be for BBQ. The steaks are good.
It's a little far(75 mi), but for a really great chicken fried steak, got to Mary's Cafe in Strawn, TX. It's the best you can find.

As with any other place of the sort, stay alert for the quick buck folks. For night life be especially careful and stick to busy, well lighted areas. Spending some time on Google earth/maps using the road view will help to let you see and get an idea as to your on-off ramps, what the routes actually look like and all. You don't want to get off on the wrong ramp in parts of Dallas. Some off ramps are on the right, others on the left. Hard to change 4 or 5 lanes of traffic at the last minute.....and could get you cited.

Agree on traffic. In the mornings by 9 things have cleared out only to close back up around the noon hour. In the afternoons it starts at 3 and lasts through about 7:30.

Hope you enjoy yourself. You can help yourself do that.
