Water filter?

How often do you change water filters on refrigerator? I purchased a new ref about 2 years ago. Forgot it had a water filter for ice maker. Book says change every 6 months. Went to store to buy one and got a sticker shock $45. Found them on amazon for $28. If I bought 2 it was free shipping. Bought 2. Some places even sell a by-pass gismo to get rid of filter.

My old ref didn't have a water filter. Ice maker never caused me a problem in over 20 years. Really don't see a need for filter. Going to cut old filter apart and see what's inside. Then I may see a need for one.

Anyone see a need for a filter when on well water in the country? I definately see the need for one if I was on city water that is treated with chemicals. Sister lives in Florida. She has one on her refrig. I can't stand the smell or taste of her city water. After it goes through her ref filter, water isn't too bad.

I have one on a new fridge. We have great town water and my new fridge will put out water without a filter. I intend not to buy one. Manual says 200 gallons or 6 months. I took it out and tested to see if it would put out water, it did.

I use a whole house carbon filter ahead of my fridge filter. Just changed the fridge filter after six years. Well water.
Did not know I could buy a bypass filter or I would have got one. Those fridge filters are expensive even on Amazon.

Most filters will filter fine until they plug, I don't think water filters have a bypass valve like an oil filter. The dirtier they are the better job of filtering they are doing, that's what I was told.

I let them go longer than I should, as well. Probably IS a chance for some nasty bacteria or mold to set up housekeeping in there when they get old enough!

I've been down that road. Did you check the country of origin on your $28 filter? Are you sure it wasn't made in China? Just a reminder that there really aren't any water filter standards, especially on ones made in China.

Don't have a filter on water to frig. but have a whole house filter on main coming in from well pump. I change it every three to four months. If you let them get to dirty its hard on the pump because it can start to restrict the flow of water making the pump work harder.

I will guarantee you you need it more on a well than city water. No way a fridge filter will take out treatment chemicals. Some particulates maybe.

A ref filter removes the fish smell from Florida water. My well is checked annualy by the state enviro people. They look for chemicals that farmers use. They find nothing. I've used an ice maker on an old ref for the past 22 years and no problems. It still works.

Sounds to me like the filter needs replaced when it stops working or produces bad tasting ice.
Thanks
