Whats it worth Rant

Does anyone tire of people asking what a tractor is worth?
Its impossible to say what something is worth, as there are so many variables to consider.
Most of the old tractors sell for more than they are worth, if you consider what they are going to be used for.
I think a better thing would be to ask what they are selling for in their location.
If the people that want to know what something is worth would give a location it would be easier to say what they are selling for.
Do any one else have an opinion?

I don't tire of it.
I can't always help establish a value but...
There are a lot folks who inherited a tractor or are trying to settle an estate.
Maybe their dad picked up a JD 50 or Ford 8N or Oliver 77 in his golden years because he drove one as a kid.
The son or daughter hasn't a clue about tractors so is just asking for some notion of it's value.
They don't know about paint or leaks or tires any more than I would know one violin from another or a diamond from a chunk of quartz.
We are not going to educate everyone about tractors and how to establish their value so I'm not going to resent someone who hasn't a clue about them.

Yes, its only worth what someone will pay,I hear, I saw one on the internet and they wanted 10,000 for the same one Im trying to sell, I tell them to not look on the computor and dont look at tractor books with prices in them, most of those prices are wish prices, get a couple offers and then take the one you like.

I also tell them to put it on ebay with no reserve and get a real idea of what it will bring all across the world.

Yes it's a bit tiring but it's probably best to just bite your tongue and move on, much like spelling and grammar. Last week on the combine page a fellow was told to clean out his "sedamant bowel". Thought that would be something of a crappy job but after a goodly chuckle, you let it go.

I like to buy and sell a few Oliver tractors. Usually by the time I finish asking questions about the tractor, the person usually changes the subject or leaves.

Did you see the "what's it worth Super 88" on the Oliver forum right now? If the guy doesn't take that one,he'd better let one of us know where it is. Sounds like a real find.

I don't really mind. I ask myself sometimes.
I have a pretty good idea of what my normal dealings sell for, but
if it is something new to me I ask you guys, because I'm confident
with the vast experience on this board that someone here will know.
I didn't think asking an opinion from a knowledgeable source would offend.
I wholeheartedly agree that location is a must.
A picture would help too. Condition of tires, paint, etc.

Or put it in the dish washer while the old lady"s out one day! she will think you are wonderful, for thinking to put the dish washer on that day. Just remember to get the bowl out before she gets home L.O.L!
Regards Robert

If it is something they had for some time no problem but just bought at public auction the day before and ask what is it worth, It is Just exactly what they paid for it. At a different time and place it may be different but just bought and paid for it is what they paid. Now if it is did I pay too much that is different.

i dont really mind, there are numerous reasons for the question some of which are a tractor they just bought, a tractor their thinking about sinking money into wondering if they can make a profit on the end product [ other than certain jds or a udlx the answer is no] others have just aquired the old home place and found it in the barn, but the one key thing to these questions is always missing... pictures of the tractor itself, condition is everything and a white computer page just doesnt offer much in the way of the answer to the question

Isn't "What is this tractor worth?" and "What are they selling for in the area?" actually the same question?

not nessessarily right here where i live city dudes, i mean new ":ranchett" owners, will pay 4 grand and a little more if you throw a home depot blade on the back, for a fair running ford N tractor, we here on this site know that a N can be had for 1 thousand and up topping at about 3000 in most other areas of the country im assuming other makes would do similer around here

I don't mind, kinda like seeing the answers as I'm sorta, kinda, half-a$$ed looking for something newer and will have one to sell. I guess no one has perfect knowledge, if there is even such, and there can be rare or desirable examples of an otherwise common tractor that can make a big difference in value. If I or someone here can help someone determine that, it's a win. For example my MIL gave me an old Cub Cadet she had parked in her barn. After questioning about it on a Cub forum I found out that it is the 5th rarest model they ever made. So from that info I've decided to keep it all original rather than add a bunch of stuff it never had back in the day or paint it all up. Not that it's all that valuable, but will be a totally original example of that model.

Like to say thanks to all who contribute to the What's it Worth threads, I sure enjoy them.
