O.T. ideas on cleaning up black walnuts from lawn

I didn't want to hijack the post below about husking black walnuts, but I am curious if any of you have an easy way to get the black walnuts off the lawn. We have 7 or 8 mature trees in the yard that yield a lot of nuts.....way too many to run the lawn mower over. When the kids were younger I used to give them $1./5 gallon pail for picking them up but they have outgrown that incentive. Don't suggest cutting the trees down as we have 4 large white ash that are dying on account of that blasted emerald ash borer and a couple of large black maple that are in their last decade due to old age. So if anyone has found something easier than a rake I am all ears!!

Get the nut wizard, roll it in the grass and picks up the walnuts. Has a gizmo that hooks on a five gallon bucket to empty the roller basket. With five or six mature walnuts you'll still be working to get them all picked up. Only easier way would be to buy three and pull them behind the mower. But you still have to dump when full. Just google nut wizard. It works. gobble

I"d say you were on the right track, getting kids to do the job. Just need to find some different/younger kids.
One of those minitaure wheel rakes that they make for use on lawns may help. I think they call them "Estate Rakes". Don"t think a lawn sweeper would be able to pick up nuts that big and heavy.

I use a lawn sweeper, probably gets 80 percent with a few extra passes in heavy spots and the squirrels can have the rest.

Place an ad somewhere. A lot of retired people pick them up in my area, for something to do in the winter time.

I use an apple rake I bought in the local feed store in town.Looks like a cross between a fork and a rake. It is plastic and works really good if the lawn is mowed short there. There are several orchards around here. More than one tree, that would be a lot of Walnuts. My tree gives around two 15 cu ft trailer loads a year.

Get the "Hillbilly Blood" guys to come over and they'll pick them up for free.

They take them and make walnut oil and trade it for a chainsaw or something like that...

Thanks for the responses. That Nut Wizard looks interesting but I think it would still be a long while picking up the amount of nuts I am going to have on the ground in the next few weeks. I have a friend that has a Steiner w/ a front mounted rotary broom for cleaning chicken barns. I am going to get him to bring it over and see if it will windrow them. If I lived in Missouri, I would have another cash crop!!
