john deere 4040 quad range

I have a John Deere 4040 tractor with quad range and it slips out of C range. Is this normal with quad range or not? Is there a adjustment on those or not?

IT maybe the shift linkage and you better PRAY it is. IF it is the shift collar you will need to tear into the transmission to fix it right.

People speed shift the ABCD ranges and grind them into gear. This wears the shift collars out. Then they start popping out of gear.

To check if it is the shift linkage shift it and "feel" for the detent. Don't just line it up with the shifter quadrant. If the detent and the quadrant do not line up then adjust the linkage until they do. If they do line up and you "feel" the detent an it pops out of gear then I would bet the shift collar is shot.

Not too bad a repair parts wise, under $1000. If you hire the labor at a dealership you could have $3-4 K in labor.

As a mechanic I just love to hear guys speed shift a Quad-range transmission. It makes more shop work for me. As a tractor owner I will not let anyone drive that does not know how to shift a quad range without grinding it.

I agree with JD Seller on checking shift linkage. Wear in linkage and cab mount doughnut flattening out can change linkage adjustments.
I would recommend installing a new spring( parts key #17-R59378) & detent ball(parts key #19-M886T) also

At LEAST 3-4k. I bought that one new in 81,in 90 it started popping out of B range. That one cost me $3500 way back then. Labor ain't getting any cheaper.

where did you get that picture at under john deere
parts.com I guess I looked at john deere parts for
that but couldnt find that picture though

Yeah I bought the spring that you were talking about
and the mechanic at john deere said some tractors have that spring and some don"t it didn"t look like our tractor had a place for that spring but we put it on anyways and it seems to help it stay in C -range.

I missed your reply inquiring about where to locate parts photo. Easy way to locate parts photo if part number is provided is insert part number in the "part number index" of the tractor model PC and each page that that part is listed on in that particular parts catalog will be shown.
