OT--Tent question

My wife and daughter have both expressed a desire to start doing some camping out. I did alot of camping in my younger years, and for me it was always a tarp strung between two trees for shelter, if that. In other words other than camping with my Grandpa, in his big, canvas, cabin tent when I was really young I haven't had much use for a tent. Now, I am looking for a cabin style tent. Something with a generous amount of head room (I'm 6'1"), and possibly one with a room divider so our daughter can "have her privacy" for changing, etc. So, since I have never bought a tent myself, and my only real experience with one was a BIG HEAVY canvas one from 35 plus years ago, I'm here to ask ya'll, who makes the best quality tent nowdays?

I bought a 3 person dome tent from REI a number of years ago. Spendy, but I've been happy with it.
I got the 3 person because the two people they must figure will fit in the 2 person tents must be midgits.I'm 6'2" myself, and it fits me just fine.
I Can't make any good recommendations for your specific needs, but the REI tent I bought has served me well.

My boys do a lot of Boy Scout camping, and we've found the Walmart tents are big, but sometimes don't hold up very well. You could start with Walmart, but after a while get a better quality.

Suggest you go to: http://www.campmor.com

I strongly recommend getting a tent LARGER than what you think you will need. Tents seem to shrink in size when you're confined inside during a sudden rainstorm.

I also strongly recommend that you get a porta-potty & privacy shelter/change room for the females in your group; they don't take kindly to squatting over a hole in the ground the way us guys do.

I've been backpacking / tent-camping most of my life; in fact I was tent-camping on my mining claim all of last week.

I have found a two man tent is almost enough room for one go about two or three sizes larger than you figure you will need

Talk to the treehuggers at REI. They don't sell anything that's not quality, but they're not cheap.

There's nothing like a rainy weekend of camping on the Blue Ridge to find out how compatible you and your soul mate really are. Add a cheap, leaky tent to the mix and you might get to learn all about alimony and child support.

Rather than get a huge cabin-style tent, I suggest two smaller ones. The smaller tents are easier to transport and erect, and they tend to be more weatherproof. That way if you and your wife are camping alone, you aren't stuck with a huge tent you don't need. I also suggest you get a standalone awning, so you'll have a place to sit and eat that's out of the sun and rain, and you'll be able to get by with a smaller tent.

NCWayne,
Lots of good suggestions.
Walmart, REI, campmor, all places to check.
Good time to be looking. End of the "outdoor" season and they are all advertising sales.
Was gonna buy one from Walmart that was a display. They found one in box and got it for the same price. 8x10 with wall. plenty of room for my 6 ft 8 in frame and 2 others plus gear,

I like a tent with external aluminum poles. I had a dome tent with Fiberglas poles that slid through pockets harder to set up.

I have a home made pop up camper that is kind of a neat little unit. I would like to sell it cheap. It is a pull type trailer which ,when set up ,is like a camper on wheels. so it's like being in a tent but you are up off the ground. I am in Iowa. I can send you pictures if you are interested. Let me know.

I was always partial to Wenzel. My opinion is dated because mine is close to thirty years old.
Mine has been packed away for probably ten years now though since we got a trailer.

Nylon seems to be the norm, beware that some do not include the top weather fly that you will need in rainy weather. I have a small cheapo from wal mart that I use when I am by myself. Really not good for hard use.

I've camped most of my life (53 now) and have many different tents over the years. If you're just going to 'try it out' and 'see if they like it', then a Wal*Mart tent would be the way to go. They are cheap and disposable (and will probably not keep you dry in a good rain storm). However, if you already know that this is going to be a 'thing' and you'll go camping a couple times (or more) a year, then I have to recommend Eureka as a brand of tent that I've settled on. I've had at least 6 different tents made by them and currently own three (different sizes). They've always kept me dry even in the most absurd conditions. I do not insist that they are better than any other tent brand. I only insist that I think they are excellent examples of today's tent technology.

Just bought a new tent for my wife and self earlier this summer. We got a Coleman unit with the structure on the outside, but all attached, so it goes up in 1 minute or less (REALLY). We've only spent a couple nights in it so far, but I'm satisfied with it.
I agree with those who say get the biggest one you think can afford, because tents are like garages, they are never as big as you think.
The best way to make sure a tent lasts is to take care of it. Be sure it's clean and dry before you store it, and just use some sense in choosing a place to set it up.
Good Luck and God Bless

If you want a good tent go look at a Military surplus place. I have a tent from back in 1951 that is very big and you can even put a wood stove it is.

Maybe rent a nice tent to try camping and to see if you want to stay with it? If that works then shop for one to buy.

NCWayne,

Have look at the Springbars.

They are not cheap, not lightweight, and not especially fast to set up, but if you want American made quality, one that will keep standing in winds (I've experienced 50 mph winds in mine with no problems), keep you dry in rain/snow, and one that your kids will still be using long after you've crossed over Jordan, this is the one.
