fast idle shifting a gator

In previous posts I had major non starting problems and the dealer had to replace rockers and rods on one cylinder.

Alternator may be weak with multiple starts and stops.

What has also developed is that the idle seems to be slightly higher resulting in grinding when shifting.

Manual says there are no carb adjustments.

I know this transmission is similar to a snowmobile so is there anything else I can check before another trip to the dealer?

Few carbs have air/fuel adjustments anymore(thank you Kalaforna&EPA) but all should have idle speed adj.

My mule had the opposite problem, idle was too slow resulting in the oil light coming on.

Mine has fuel injection, however like a car with fuel injection, there is still a throttle plate with an idle stop.

Mark your idle stop with a sharpie and slow it down a little. On my mule there is a fine line between two slow, oil light and too fast grinding gears when shifting.

I have to wait for a few seconds before putting mine in gear. The computer makes the idle run a little fast when it first starts.

Gators have always had a high idle issue. You just POP the gear shifter in. DO not shift it slow. They will live for jsut about ever POPing them in. You baby it and shift it slow/grinding and it will tear up in a short period of time.

The owners that have the most trouble with Gators running are OLD guys LOL. They where designed to be USED and USED hard. You baby them around and they never run right.

Neighbor has had different ones now for 15 years. The first ten years he drove me nuts keeping it running right. 9 times out of 10 it was related to him Putting around in it. HE never would open it up and burn the carbon out of everything. I changed more spark plugs and clean the muffler out all of the time. Now he has Grand kids that are big enough to run his Gator. He has very few problmes now with it. They run the SNOT out of it and it runs better.

We turned the idle nut down a bit and it seems to be fine. My son didn't like that it would run off pretty fast without using the gas pedal.

He watches a ton of Gator video's and says a lot do grind the gears so I will ask him if we have found a happy medium.

Bill I was not trying to just be a smart butt in my earlier post. The transmission grinding issue of JD Gators has been there since day one. They just use a variable pulley set that loosens the belt at dead idle. In neutral the belt rubbing the center of the pulley is enough for it to windmill. IF you shift it into gear slowly it will windmill enough to grind like crazy. So you just need to shift it faster into gear. Like I said earlier, you POP it into gear. NOT force it just shift it fast. If it does not go in and grinds go back to neutral and try again. Also if your on a grade let it roll just a little in the direction you want to go in, pop it in while rolling just a little. They will not grind as much.

It sounds like you have gotten the idle slower. This will help but they always will grind a little because they use the belt drive and not a true clutch.
