importing tractor from Ontario Canada to U.S.

I need help or information on how to import an antique tractor from Ontario Canada into the US. I have never done this before. Would you take your own truck and trailer or should I get a broker?
Any info would be appreciated.

Where was the tractor made? If U S there should be no duty on it. MAKE SURE IT IS SPOTLESS CLEAN [This is a biggie] So they don't hassle you about bringing foreign contaminates to the U S . Have all ser # and a bill of sale signed by you and the seller with addresses . If in question call the boarder WHERE you will be crossing and ask questions and get Names and ID numbers in case there is a problem.

Might not be practical, but my uncle bought one and drove it across. I'm sure the rules are a lot stricter now.

Don't know what the situation is now; back in the 60's and 70's it was a $5 broker's fee to move equipment back and forth across the border.

I am not sure about whole goods like tractors. Bought a used tractor head earlier this year. Paid $300 for it and two weeks later got a bill for $25.00 from UPS for some kind of import tsx due. Aparently they are the customs representative to collect the tax. Paid it did not want to screw up my UPS account.
ps head originated in the USA.

It's been about 6 years since I bought one in Canada and brought it over. I had spoken with a lot of folks before hand, so I knew there was really nothing that needed to be done. I did be sure to get a bill of sale, just to be on the safe side. Once I got to the crossing, the border agent was a real gem. He kept asking for paper work that shows it meets emissions. I kept telling him that it's a 1951 model, made in the US, so no worries. He didn't get that, so he went to his supervisors station. When he came back, he said it'll be $5,000, of course he was joking, but I didn't know that, as I was in complete shock. Once I was aware of the joke, I was on my way with no further hassle.

Not sure on all the rules but have heard that if the tractor was originally from the U.S. it will be easier to get the tractor home than it will be for you to get home.
I do not think they will take a regular old drivers license as a form of id anymore.

You will need a passport, and a bill of sale for the tractor. Have it clean and drive it through customs!
