Ok Chevy guys, what's the difference?

Drove down to the Dandy tonight to get the weekly ice cream allocation (fer the dawg of course)anyway I parked my 95' Silverado next to a nearly identical 95' red Chevy. Got the ice cream (for the dawg) and my smokes (the dog don't smoke). A nice lady followed me out of the store and obviously belonged to the red truck. Her truck says 4X4 on the rear fender, mine says Z71 off road. She asked me what the difference was. I told her "I suppose maybe the sticker on the fender?" I had not kept up on the chevy nomenclature having driven Fords for a number of years. So what is the difference?

I am on my second Z71. First one was a 96, this one is an 05. The way I was told, the Z71 half ton has 3/4 suspension under it and a trailering package. Last, but not least , that awesome sticker on the rear fenders!

Different option packages. The Z71 was more expensive, but I don't remember the differences. A Chevy truck website should have that info, or google Z71 and your year of Chevy truck.

"Z71" is the GM option code, aka Regular Production Option (RPO). As previously stated, the Z71 is an off-road package and a little more expensive than the standard 4WD pickup. Think Z28 Camaro versus standard Camaro. If you look inside your glove box you'll see a sticker with all the options on your truck.

Here's a link to a PDF list of known GM RPOs. I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Its more of the Bilstiens than anything. You an get a 4X4 badged truck with skid plates, but not the Bilsteins, and 4X4 with Bilsteins and not skid plates. At least thats what Ive seen and have been told by the dealer here. My 08 was badged 4X4, but had skid plates and I think Rancheros from the factory. My 98 was badged Z71 and had both Bilsteins and skid plates, and my 13 has both (Z71). (Of course theres different gear options for both)

There's no saying for sure with Chevy. You have to keep in mind that a 1/2 ton came in 4 different gvwr in the same time period. As far as I know, Z71 is only some skid plates and better shocks. For 3/4ton suspension, you had to order the F44 package, which is the 14bolt S.F. rear end, and order the extra leaf springs.

A regular 1/2 ton rcsb had a 6100gvwr. A rclb, ecsb, and eclb had a 6200 gvwr. A truck with the F44 package had a 6600lb gvwr, and some people claim that some trucks with the F44 package and the extra leaf springs had a 7200lb gvwr. This would make sense, as that's all a 6 lug 2500 is, but why Chevy would offer the 2500LD is questionable.

Ok guys thanks for the input, I think if another purdy girl asks what the difference between the two are I'll tell her the sticker on the fender or the color of the truck. Some ladies get testy if you have better shocks or more skid plates than they do.
Given the choice I'd perfer a comperable F-150. The deal I got on this old Chevy would have been dumb to pass up.
Thanks

On that year, Z71 was only available on a 1/2 tons.
It included an engine oil cooler among other thing optional on a standard 4x4.

Hi
I have the proper L.O.L! GMC 97 4x4 Z71 About the only things that are different, apart from some stuff the other guys have said. It"s a 1000-$1500 dearer to buy a used GM over a Chev Round here. And also few parts you pick up for it at 10 to 5 on Saturday.
The parts guys usually in a rush to get home/ down the bar.
Then You find they are the wrong part, when you go to rip it apart Sunday morning. Transmission rear drive shaft U"Js are a good one, they are bigger than a standard Half ton!.
Regards Robert

According to Trailer Life Magazine, "the Z71 off road package
makes it a decent street truck".
I've never owned one so don't shoot the messenger.
I just remember that quote from the review.
