outboard oil in diesel

is it a good idea to mix outboard oil or atf in diesel to add lub ability to fuel ?? how much per 100 gal

I've been mixing two cycle in to the diesel fuel for my JD4320 for five years now. About 3oz every fill up.

The injector pump would stick and when idled down it would die. Not good on a hot turbo engine. I'd have to knock on the pump to restart and even had to tear into the pump once.

The two cycle oil cured it.

On Fordtrucks.com there was a guy who tested all kinds of additives to see which got the best mileage. He tried ATF, motoroil, power service, lucus, Marvel, and some others I can't remember. Two cycle won for him.

Why do you think you need more lube? Is what it will do "adding a oil" Is increase the specific gravity of the fuel, and is what that will do is increase the HP. Is what we used to do to our service trucks with computer engines is add a quart of used motor oil to about 40 gal, of fuel. Helped plenty, Again , why do you think you need more lube???

Maybe because they cut way back on the sulphur, which used to be the lube. Could help, can't hurt. Why not? Maybe by adding something we'll offend the fuel manufacturers and they'll quit selling to us?

The pump fuel you buy all ready has the additives in it to improve lubricity that was removed by the process used to remove the additional sulfur.
I would use a diesel additive rather than two stroke oil but it"s your $"s, your engine, your call.

(quoted from post at 17:36:17 09/08/13) New John Deere tractors leave the factory with Bio-Diesel in the tank does that answer the question.

I would say not since because the question is diesel as opposed to diesel going into new JDs. You have to look at what diesel the engine was built to run on. I would not dare to go without added lubricant in a diesel engine built for high sulfur fuel. I use two stroke oil myself, because it is formulated to both lubricate and burn.

None issue.
Refineries added extra injection pump lubricant a few months after ULS diesel was introduced.
Some people just feel compelled to pour magical elixers into thier machines and expect miraculous results.

The main ingredient in 2 cycle oil is Jet A........IE really clean diesel. Won't hurt a thing. I use a quart mixed into 50 gallons every now and then

I throw in a little oil every time I fill up the diesels lately. I figure it won't do any harm and might do some good. None of my diesels are any newer than 1992. I have used 2 cycle oil, power steering oil, atf, probably a few other odd bits of leftover oil I have had around the farm for years.

I use Lucas semi-synthetic 2-cycle oil at the rate of 1 quart per 50 gallon, and I use Power Service also. In 14 years here on the farm and 2 diesel tractors, never put a wrench on an injector, never pulled a pump, never had an algae problem, never had a water problem. Tom

I use 2 stroke oil because of the wimpy Stanadyne injector pump in my M-1031 mil pick-up truck.. Those pumps are known to bail prematurely due to internal wear from "dry" fuel.. About 4 to 5 oz. per fill up..

I put up a link to a fuel test put together by some guys from the turbo diesel registry in another post real recent-like here. I should bookmark it. Most additives, including used motor oil and marvel mystery oil, were proven to be nothing but snake oil, and most of what was tested proved to be bad for the system.

When I started using 2-stroke in my 90 Cummins I didn"t notice any change in fuel mileage, but it started to run quieter, and it started to put a little smoke out the pipe again on winter blend.

Found it again.

They used untreated fuel for the tests, what refinery-treated fuel actually tests at, I don"t know. For all a bottle of 2-stroke costs, I figure it"s cheap insurance.

The engine manufacturers would like to see the testing score under 460, and 2-stroke alone brings it down to within the margin of error of the test.

yeh & they do that after thy have texted tere girlyfriend - 'they' are spposed to do alot of things but i don't no if they do or not and it wont hurt to back themup with sum of your own stuff

It certainly cannot hurt and has been proven to help when the diesel fuel has low-lube. Do you trust every fuel seller to be putting the proper lube additives in? I don't and I don't think modern fuel makers are very concerned about older machines with rotary distributor-type mechanical fuel injection pumps.

New York recently switch all the heating oil and farm/off-road diesel to low-sulfur. The seller I buy from puts the additive heating oil if it gets sold for engine-fuel.

Tests have been done and I believe them. Buy two-stroke-cycle oil at Walmart in gallon jugs and it gives the best added lube protection for the buck. Mix at a 200 to 1 ratio.

THE RESULTS:

These results are listed in the order of performance in the HFRR test. The baseline fuel used in every test started at an HFRR score of 636. The score shown is the tested HFRR score of the baseline fuel/additive blend.
Also included is the wear scar improvement provided by the additive as well as other claimed benefits of the additive. Each additive is also categorized as a Multi-purpose additive, Multi-purpose + anti-gel, Lubricity only, non-conventional, or as an additive capable of treating both gasoline and diesel fuel.
As a convenience to the reader there is also information on price per treated tank of diesel fuel (using a 26 gallon tank), and dosage per 26 gallon tank provided as “ounces of additive per 26 gallon tank”.
