Our neighbors had an old 45 when I was a kid. Amazing how things got done back then, compared to todays size of machinery. Thanks for sharing.

Those are some really great pics the machine has no paint worn of the header that I can see was it new at the time? thanks for posting

Nice picture of an almost new combine. I see the door is left open on the top of the return elevator so he can glance back to see how much is being returned. The first combine to harvest corn on this farm was a 45.

The first thing to come to my mind when I saw the pic was how much history your grandpa could share with us if he was alive today. Do you know how old he was at the time? He looks to be old enough to have been a WW1 vet. He might even have known a few old civil war vets when he was a little kid. Jim

Dad had a 45 like that, he had a "windbreaker" cab that he used when the weather got colder. We called the combine "Bertha".

The first combine I ever drug home was a roundback 45, thought I had something...Then a Ford 611 (Oliver 25) then IHC 303 then Massey (was it 300 and later a 410 I believe???) then a 2 row Gleaner E I think??? which was the best of em all

I don't think it was, I think he bought it in the late 50's. He had a 40 and that burned up, that's when he got the 45...John

We had a Case 600 w/cab and 3 row back in late '60,s and we were happy campers. Sure beat the ole days of pickers and corn cribs! Nice photos.

I don't remember combine, but I do remember coming home from school and finding 2 or 3 barge type wagons of ear corn to shovel off every night before doing chores. I don't miss ear corn. Dad always wanted to use a wire type ear corn scoop so there wouldn't be any shelled corn in the crib. It was like shoveling with a wet noodle.

now that's Modern ,, Back in 63 'Pop had us All out there snappin ears by hand and tossing up to a pile,or tossing against the backboard wagon ,,,we hand piked 15 acres in 1966..

Our neighbors had the first 55JD self propelled combine[probably some proto types]and was considered pretty modern. We can do 5 acres an hour with our newer combine compared to doing 20 acres on a good day with a two row 101 IH bought in the early 60s.

The 40 was not built untill I think 61 and that is what is called a Hi-Lo 45 and they did not come out also I think untill 61 and 63 was the last year for them and in 64 went to the square back models. The earlier 45 was called a Hi model. And the 210 corn head that is on it came out for 62 and the older head was a 10 head. I had both a 62 & 63 in the round back and a 65 & 69 in the square back models and the 210 corn heads plus a 234 and later 313 head for them. And that grill screen for the radiator should have been lifted up from storage position before opperating in the field. He probably had a plugged radiator.
