What was this tool used for?

I'm sure I was told years ago, but I don't remember.
I also didn't get a good shot to show size.
It is a one handed tool, the blade about the same size as a
scratch awl or ice pick. A little thicker. About 6 inches long.
Hopefully you can see the drill tip though. Not an awl.
I want to think it was a leather drill or some other harness tool.
Anyone know for sure?

Your real lucky that is an 18th century English drill bit with
handle. It made on a forge. I have an identical drill bit but
larger and is used with a brace.

Cub is right, it is a Gimlet drill, for making
starter holes for wood screws, got some with wood
handles, some with metal.

As others have said, gimlet, usually you could get a set of 4-5, and
it would be all that a carpenter would need, up to about 3/8", then
you had a brace and bit, for the bigger sizes. World's first cordless
drill. not used for leather, sorry.

I have a brace and bits around here too.
It would be a rare occasion when I would use them though!

This would make a messy hole in leather.

Any kind of hole-maker in leather would look more like a hollow tube than a drill. Leather is soft and has to be punched, not drilled. This is for wood.

This is my drill bit that is an 18th century bit I learned about these on a OPB program. Notice that mine is made to use use on a wood brace with no chuck just a tapered hole in the bottom to accept the bit.

Gimlet? Personally, I prefer a Gin Martini made with Tangueray!
The gimlet with the handle is made for drilling holes in wood as others have said. I have a couple around the place somewhere but I have never used them.
This is the tool for starting wood screws.
This tool I have used countless times since I acquired it a few years ago.
