For those that are knowledgeable on the John Deere tractors, I need to upgrade to a better tractor that will be used primarily for haying, also light tillage work (3x18 plow, 12ft disk, 4 row planter). I found a 6400 2wd with 5,000 hours in what appears to be very nice shape. Anything in particular to look for on these tractors? Planning to test drive and view in person soon. Want something that is dependable like my 4020, but with more comfort features. (Can buy this 6400 for about the same price as a good side console 4020 anyway.)

We have a 6400 Deere, have had for about 3 years now. Has right about 5000 hours on it, a little less. Good Tractor. Cab is nice. Powerquad is nice. We have a loader on it....makes for a nice loader tractor. Ours has the rack and pinion rear axle, I prefer that over the pressed rear wheels. Other than a issue with the air ride seat (pump fell out of bracket) and changing the idlers on the front serp. belt we have not had any real issues. Nice handy tractor for what you described.

Dairyman I know had one- it caught fire and burned to the ground. But he must have liked it- he took the insurance money and bought another just like it.

Well I have a 1992 JD 6400 MFWD with a JD 640 loader. It just turned over 16,000 hours. One drive shaft and transmission input shaft, one head gasket, and several PTO switches. That is about all I have done to the tractor. It gets ran every single day.

Things to look for?? The rack and pinion axles and casting make the tractor be heavier in the rear for loader work. They commonly have a rattle in the transmission at dead idle, it should go away with just a little engine speed. Mine has done it since new. The cab models have to have the cab filters blown out regularly. I do mean every 50-100 hours. They pull the air off the floor in through the filters. Livestock guys with mud and manure on their feet, make dust that will plug the filters fast.

There really is not a common trouble area on them. They have been a real dependable tractor around here at least.

Had one for about ten years, now, has 9000 hrs on it. Had a problem with the transmission about a year ago, lost one gear, and the fix wasn't cheap, but I chalked it up to use. We have also had some electrical issues with it over the years, but it's more complicated than a 40 series. I think I'd rather have a --10 series- most of the bugs were worked out by then. But it's a good tractor, and gutsy for a four cylinder.

I have a neighbour that has 2 and has had 2 others. This guy's idea of regular maintenance is change the oil and grease it every 2 years or 5000 hours, whichever comes first. The first one went 17000 hours before needing a motor job, then burnt 1000 hours later because it was covered in huge amounts of dust. The second one burnt at only 10000 hours because of even more dust, and it was still a nice tractor. The third one has about 25000 hours on it and the fourth one only has 7 or 8000 hours on it. Any tractor that can put up with his abuse for that long is good enough for me, too bad I can't afford one.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll check it out. Nice part is that my Westendorf loader that is only 4 years old will fit this tractor if I buy the brackets for it.
