Farmall M --moving wheel out on axle

I have a farmall M and want to move the rear wheels slightly apart. What's the easiest way. I don't have a gear puller that big--do I need one?

Have the half moon shaped clamps on the bottom then loosen the four bolts holding the two half moon shaped clamps. Loosen them to the point where there is about 3/8" - 1/2" between the clamp & the axle. Take a hydraulic jack under the axle housing & jack up one side until the axle is centered between the upper hub & the clamps. Then grab to top of the tire & pull tire, wheel & all out until the outer edge of the hub leans on the axle & then jack the jack up & the bottom of the wheel will fall out when you start to raise tire, wheel & all up off the floor. repeat until you get the wheel to the position wanted. Jack up one side, not too high. Loosen bolts on clamp and give er a whack. May need to soak a while or even use heat. Do one side at a time for stability. You may also want to dish your wheels differently. Measure each side to make the same.

Use some motor oil between the main casting and axle; makes sliding the axle much easier.
Tighten the 4 clamp bolts evenly; when you get them as tight as you can, put a 3-4' cheater pipe on the 3/4" drive breaker bar & tighten some more. (you do have a 3/4" socket set, don't you?) If not, rent one at your local rental store.
Recheck the bolts after driving the tractor for a few miles.

I loosen the clamps, squirt WD 40 then oil between the clamps and axle. With the wheel jacked up push on the top, then bottom and work it back and forth on the axle either in or out.

I agree with gmccool, always worked good for me on my Farmall C! Are the hubs frozen on the axle? If so, loosen all 8 of the hub bolts just a little, like enough to see daylight between part of the chock and the axle, and then drive around a little. It will break those puppies loose in a matter of seconds! Bryce

Wrecking bar between the axle housing and the wheel (block to width if wide).

It'll take about 3 seconds to slide 'er out.

Once you get out farther than you can move this way run a chain from one wheel spoke over the end of the axle and back to a spoke on the opposite side. Use the chain between the chain and the end of the axle.

A chain works o move them is also. Run the chain through the spokes and around the hitch brackets. Turn the wheel to tighten the chain to pull the wheel in.
