Oliver 1650 lost upper shift quadrant!

Hello,

I'm fairly new to tractors and was out plowing the other day. I finished a row, lifted the plow and went to turn and heard a loud squeal under my feet. I immediately hit the clutch and stopped. After this happened, I could no longer use the upper quadrant of my shift pattern. When I try, the engine bogs down as if the brakes are locked (they're not) and if I let the clutch out further, the tractor will jump as if I just popped the clutch. At this point I push the clutch back in. Another thing I noticed is that when I go back and forth between lower and upper neutral, I have to have the clutch in or it grinds when I try to get into the upper neutral. Thoughts/suggestions?

There are two shift rails in it. When one of mine broke,it would go in to reverse then if I tried to go in to a forward gear it would end up in two gears at once. I don't know what happens of the other rod breaks?

Look down under the front of the cowl to the right hand side of the chain coupler.(brake pedal side) There's a cover on there. Take that off and move your shift and see if both of those rods are moving alright.

You either had a transmission lube pump failure or you were low on transmission lube and you have seized the top shaft. This is going to get expensive fast .

I agree with Tractor Vet. You locked a gear to one of the shafts. More than likely the front gear to the input shaft. It runs on needle bearings on the shaft. I had one do that on my 1655 when it only had 1500 hours or so on it.

If you need a new input shaft and gear you have to pull the engine and hydraul. Then the parts are going to be the best part of a grand if you go with new ones.

You need to really keep the trans lube filter changed very regularly.

Any way to get at it to see the problems without pulling engine/tranny? As it is right now, I do still have 1, 2, R1, and 5th gears...
Looking through the fluid fill port on top, I can see movement on both the lower and upper set of gears when I move the shift lever. Not sure what I'm looking at down there but just more information.

You don't have to pull the motor, but you have to take the top off the transmission and read end. You have to take off the seat, floor boards and take all the bolts out around the outside where the bolts came out that hold the floor boards. Then there are two,one on either side of the hyd filter housing. The whole top,3pt rockshaft and all has to be lifted off.

Before you tear into it too much, I would take off the transmission cover(cover which the gear shift attaches to). This would give you a good view of the transmission.

I agree with what you guys are saying but the top shaft does not run on needle bearings on a 1650. I have had a few apart and most of them were because while plowing when they failed because there was not enough oil in the transmission for the lube pump to pick it up due to the right wheel running in thefurrow. By the way for your 550 hydraulic filter post I have a new filter with an Oliver part number that is a paper filter. I probably have had it on the shelf for 25 years. J..

J. Schwiebert you more than likely are correct on the needle bearings. It has been 30 plus years ago that I did mine. I remember the input shaft was welded to the gear that road on it. I had to cut it out of the transmission.

The tractor was full of gear oil to where it should have been but I think the filter was plugged some. I have always changed that filter every other oil change, 200 hours. I have not had any trouble since.

the sound was two gears welding together if you are close to dalton oh. take complete top shaft and oil pump to tim smith he can repair this.
