Partner at work has truck in. 96 C1500 Chevy 2wd plain work truck. Brake lights stuck on. We have the luxury of putting a few parts on at will. He put on new brake light switch...still on. Unhooked it, still on. Put on multi function turn switch in column, still on. Disconnected all wiring to trailer plug hook up at back, still on. Swapped out brake light relay, still on. But, pull relay they go off, tap brakes they go on and stay on. Also checked cleaned and repaired any grounds. Must be a diode somewhere??

Post should say "lights" as they are both on. And I should add everything in the bulb/socket areas checked out too.

A couple of thoughts... same switched contact on stoplight switch ties into cruise control circuit... could try unplugging the cruise unit and see if that is feeding back enough current to keep the stoplight relay closed once actuated.

Also (don"t have access to a diagram at the moment) IIRC, there"s circuitry connecting the stoplight relay and the CMSL relay (center mount stop light)... what happens if you unplug the CMSL relay?

Check the cruise control deactivation switch in the brake line / master cylinder, could be the problem.

On the ranches 91, I put a battery disconnect on it. Got tired of the battery being dead. I don't worry about the lights cause it never sees the road.

It is in the wheel sender for the anti lock brake system and computer. Expensive repair i am told. Was told it does not effect brake performance, by a real good brake shop. I drive my farm truck with the brake lights lite. It goes off sometimes but comes back on. Advance auto can turn it off with the diagnostic checker but it will come back. Way down my list of things to worry about.

I should have worded it different. This is the brakes lights, as in the ones on the back. Not the dash light. Sorry about being unclear

Make sure someone did not turn on the hazard lights and burn up the flasher if so it would keep the park lights on and the turn signals would not work
Happened to me one time and took a little time to find it

Trailer light plug shorted. And check the parking brake, pull the leaver and pull up on the pedal.
Also,no wheel sensors on a 96.

No doubt there's a short to voltage in there somewhere. Do you have a trailer brake controller on it? If so, disconnect it, and any other aftermarket electrical options and see if that helps. Otherwise, you're going to have to chase the wiring harness around corners and brackets for pinches and abrasions. If you can find a schematic diagram for it, that would be very helpful.
Good Luck and God Bless

Yeh - The 91' k1500 that I feed with is starting to get confused too - what I'm reading here is what I thought - might be a train-wreck

In the end it was the third brake light. It has a tall service cap on the back with the third light and he just unplugged it since its strictly an in plant truck. I asked him what he found with the light but he's a moody sort and didn't offer much other than the light is a sealed unit and its now unhooked. Thanks for the tips!
