I spotted these bright red Hawthorne berries while I was out swathing oats today. I read that they are edible. Does anybody actually do anything with them?

The berries (Apple like tiny fruit) are able to be eaten or made into tea(limited amounts), but the seeds are poison. They contain cianide in quantities that are dangerous. The article is clear on this issue. The berries and leaves are used in medicine (natural, not from major drug companies) Making a pie from them ((even with no seeds))would be a high risk as it is definately not without side effects, some of which are heart related.
Not for pie.

Up until the 1920's, Hawthorn extract was the recommended treatment for heart failure. It is still recommended by some alternative doctors like Dr Weils and Whitaker. Some countrys in Europe use to this day.
I called a leading vitamin and herb company a few years ago to find where they source their hawthorn berries to make the extract...Romania was the answer. Seems like I would have enough in the back pastures to supply them for years.

The berries are also edible in jams and pies.

I know a bit about hawthorn.I check blood pressure ever morning.10 minutes after taking 2 hawthorne capsules BP drops 10 points and heart rate drops 5 points. So I would not be making a pie with hawthorne berries. The berries have one large seed.Digitalis come from the foxglove plant. So you must know your plants well.Doctor wants me to take blood pressure daily. This tracks the effectiveness of he Enalapril take to control high blood pressure.I know that stress increases blood pressure.

With the name haw-THORNE they have thorns, right? While riding along with my sister on a golf cart a tree branch brushed against the cart's roof support, I grabbed a hold of the branch and immediately had a thorn in my finger. It was easy to pull out, but something on the thorn made that spot sore for a week or more.

I remember coming home from school one day almost 70 years ago and there were 3 Hawthorne bicycles sitting in the living room. I got a black one with the horn in the tank, my sister got a green one and my brother got a red one. My cousin had a black one too. Sheepskin seat cover mudflaps and dual foxtails.
