I shooda stood in bed!

Plan was to clean up the barnyard. Had two tractors, one with a loader, one with an old decrepit spreader. So far today, I managed to fix the spreader long enough to spread the remains of the load after yesterday"s breakdown. Two more breakdowns today. Just finished patching the last - donno if I want to go out and see if my welding will hold or not. Believe it or not, the cast pitman arm that runs the rachet snapped. Think when the beater chain jumped, it took the arm as well, "cause it was jammed behind it. Not supposed to be able to weld cast, but I did anyway. (You can do a lot of unusual things with a wire welder.) We"ll see if it holds. I should have stayed in bed.

Donno what it was. Very coarse crystals. Ground off very fast when I attacked it on the bench grinder to "v" the break so I could weld it. Plenty of sparks when it ground. Welded up OK - at least held up so far - three loads. Probably would have gotten ten or more if I could have hauled all day.

The last time I hauled "bedding" I broke the drag chain and unloaded the old way. The next day the Boss chewed me out for overloading and breaking the chain. After getting it back together I loaded the next load and he hollered to put more on, two more buckets later I broke the chain again(three more buckets than I had put on the first time). I parked the tractor and walked to the car and went home, he never said a word the next morning, but the spreader was empty. 1973 and I have not hauled any since.
