Let me recap: 2nd qtr of 8th grade football. Jr is running is ball. Their biggest guy dives and gives him a helmet to the shin. Result? broken tibia. Same leg he broke 3 yrs ago in practice before the first game! His spirits? CRUSHED He wanted to play! and in this video game era I wanted him to play! Any bone, any time, just not now! what a drag! You know, you feed em 3 squares, get em to bed early, and to practice on time! And now this! Give me some positive words. Thank you

My nephew has had knee surgery twice and he's only a senior in high school. These football boys are playing for keeps!

Have you already had the "wait 40 years and that sucker's gonna hurt" discussion?

Good thing is that these boys heal very quick. He'll be back on all 4's sooner than you can blink. It will only seem like forever to him.

Hope your boy has a speedy recovery.

I worried about school "sports" leaving lasting injuries with my kids. I asked them if it was worth risking a life time of the results of an injury. They where active in other things is school.

Heck every kid is different. IF Redtom Jr. still wants to go for it next year, then great for him. LOL I have to admit I would be gun shy as all get out.

time to re-think the sports thing. Football will really get rough in the next four years and with a twice-broken leg? He has a future; time to start thinking about it.

I had knee surgery 61 years ago - and I still suffer from it. I would walk away from anything that I suspected might hurt my knees or other parts of my body. Just not worth it; too many other worthwhile things to do with a person's time.

Not a very positive note, but a bit of something for him to think about.....I broke my leg 2 years ago and I have been told the pain I still suffer will be with me the rest of my life! It is not stopping me but it sure as h3ll holds me back. I used to come off the tractor around 8.00pm and go into the workshop for 3-4 hours ....not anymore. The ankle is swollen and too sore.
Try and get him to rethink his football.....there is more to life!
And wish him a speedy recovery.
Sam

Good luck with the healing.
Sports for kids is really a shame due to all the injuries. When I was a kid, (a long time ago) A kid on another team died in the hospital a week after a broken neck on the field. Terrible way to end the life of a 16 year old.

How is this for positive? Maybe He was due to get a brain muddling helmet to the helmet in a game that he will now miss.

Also I guess he needs to rethink going into the kitchen at home as thats the #1 place most accidents happen. Also needs to quit riding in car or walking or biking or just living I guess.

Your grandkids ride horses just as or more dangerous than football.Lots of kids killed and injured riding horses did you ask them if it was worth risking their life to ride?

Wanna hear the kicker? The case worker in the ER said ins. will not cover crutches since he had a pair 3 yrs ago and they only pay for a pair every 5 yrs! I said how do we go home with a broken leg and no crutches? She said "I have no idea". I told her I will take him out in their chair and take chair and all then. (I will gladly buy a pair. Its just the thought that she has no idea how we would get home!) "Here's the door little Johnny! now crawl to the car". Give me a break!

houlda kept the crutches he got 3 years ago.
But i guess it's a throw away world ain't it

Since he will be out of football practice for awhile, maybe could use the time to learn to play an instrument. Instruments and lessons are expensive, but less expensive than MRI's, knee surgery, and broken bones. On top of that, he can still play when he is 90.

He's already healing, redtom. Got a 9th gr in football. I say a prayer as they shake hands as he looks up at the shortest opponent. He LOVES it, knows he can get hurt. Carries the ball a lot. Got a 11th gr who is 6 ft and plays tenor drum in marching band..Loves it. Do your best at what you love, always keep your options open (grandkids)

Don't give up on that leg yet Sam, I had a compound fracture of my left ankle in 1982, eight days in the hospital, two weeks in bed, seventeen weeks off work and many blood thinner shots in the belly. It hurt bad for close to twenty years, swollen, foot felt loose, limped all the time and then it was good.
Doesn't bother me a bit now unless I sprain it just a little or spend much time on ladder.

Oh, I still got em. They're too short! That's the kicker. Ins. says only one pair every five years. Well, kids grow! Duh. I can see one pair every five years for an adult. They usually don't get any taller. But kids get taller and his old ones are all adjusted out.
