I ordered a set of ford work shop manuals volums 1&2, and a wiring digram manual for my 02 ford E 450. This motor is in my motorhome. The first thing I need to check it tells me I need a PC/ED manual for diagnosis. What are the manuals PC/DE they are refering to? I thought I had all I needed. Stan

What they trying to tell you is that with any of the new vehicles you that very, very expensive computer to diagnose any problems. It's cheaper in the long run to take it to your dealer and get a diagnoses then decide if you want to fix it or let them. These things run on computers and only a computer can tell you what is wrong with them. The day of the backyard mechanic is dying off fast.

PC/ED stands for powertrain control electronic diagnosis. Basically what that means is its another book full of flow charts, or as theyre called in the PC/ED, pinpoint tests. The service manuals you purchased tell you how to replace the failed part, the PC/ED gives you step by step diagnosis to condemn the failed part. They are full of information and tests that make diagnosis easy, but can also lead you on a so called "rabbit trail". i had my fun with them during my 7 years at a Ford dealership.

Walt is very much correct. What i forgot to say is all the pinpoint tests in the PC/ED are for codes pulled from the vehicles computer using a scan tool. you can pull most codes with a generic scan tool from an auto parts store, but there are some maufacturer specific codes that the genneric tools wont touch.

Yes, very much agree with Walt. Tried to fix a problem with an 92 F-250 myself. Thought I had it figured out twice, but nope I was wrong. Took it to the mechanic and he fixed it for less than I had spent on 2 part's. So I learned my lesson, I don't mess with anything electronic anymore.

The PC/ED manual covers electronic engine controls, but even with it ,without some good diagnostic tools and a working knowledge of Fords What kind of problem are you having ?
