HELP B F AVERY

GOT IN MAIL TODAY CAM AND OIL PUMP FROM ZIMMERMAN CLETRAC PARTS, the cam is missing distributor gear which is located on front end of cam shaft. Called ZIMMERMAN the guy told me I could take my gear off and put on his shaft. does any one know how the dist. gear is fixed to cam shaft? I believe it broke off. Now your big timing gear is splined, but the shaft does not extend past that gear to drive the dist. gear on like he said I could do.

If you do not have a cam shaft, you cannot compare them.
If you do, I cannot imagine not seeing the difference between his statement, and your discovery of no place to put it.
A machine shop will be able to remove Both the gears from your old shaft. compare the shafts, and if the ""new"" shaft is shorter and broken you need to email him the pictures and get a refund. If they are the same, all is well and you need to have a machine shop install the gears. Jim

JIM--- understand all. and thanks, DO you know how the small distributor gear was fixed to shaft? I'M 65 mechanic all my working life bothers me when I can't see how it was originally assembled. I do have my old shaft with the dist. gear connected. but what I want to know did the splined shaft extend past timing gear to support the small dist. gear. IF so then it's broke off and will have to send back.

I be in that age category as well I have not been associated with that engine. I would use carb spray and a hand lens to carefully look at the ""new"" shaft. I would also look at the way the engine front cover is assembled to assure the location of the distributor in relation to the cam gear. My guess is that the small gear presses on with a key way, and that the cam gear is splined to the shaft. Posting a picture might be good if no satisfaction. Having a very clean original cam and gears and looking how it is assembled would be my way. I have a full machine shop and foundry to play in, so It would be my suggestion to take it to a machinist. Here are some pictures of a cam and crankshaft from an Avery. Hal

THAT'S the wrong cam shaft, mine has to have the distributor gear in front of timing gear. got one in today it's wrong, took to machine shop, they pulled the dist. gear, and found out the shaft I got would have to be bored to fit dist. gear. 100.00 for machine work. only give 75.00 for the cam. SO I will be sent back. did find out there was two different cams for the zxb3.
