Cycle about to start again

The yearly calf run of weaned calves going to kansas and Oklahoma does not usually start until late October into November but around this time every year people in our area start selling old cows that weaned spring calves and other cows that did not have a calf along with any other long age or rough cattle they could not pen last spring. Most of these early fall cattle will be in poor to medium flesh and they won't bring a whole lot. It is a pretty predictable market here, I imagine it is a lot different in the midwest and north where the best grazing is in the summer, here in the deep south the best grazing by far is winter grazing of planted annuals. Cattle bought between now and December 1st will run on mature pasture and be fed hay and corn silage, as long as we get rain in October they will be on oats, ryegrass and clover from shortly after Thanksgiving until the end of April and then be sold. The majority will sell as killer cows but on average 15-20% will have a calf during the winter and those pairs get sold in March. Cutting bulls, Holstein, and longhorn type steers over 800 lbs. go to a North Texas feeder. There used to be several people running fall cows in my area but we are one of the very few left in the business.
