Antique hit and miss engines

Good day,
I was out to visit my daughter in Newfoundland recently. I could not believe how many antique engines there was on people's front yards as ornaments. I live in Ontario all the scrap dealers would have had them by now.

When you think back, up to 20 years ago... every small fishing boat from 20 foot dories to old fashioned 40 or 50 footers ran on these one lunger things...
not allowed to fish anymore, no use for the boat.. but the engine makes a nice reminder of the good ol days, as a flower pot...

In 1961 I was at Northwest River, Labrador, Newfoundland a little community about 40 miles from Goose Bay. I saw an old one cylinder engine with the big flywheels, possibly a five horsepower pulling a sawmill. Their logs seemed to be about 8 inches in diameter. I wish I had looked more closely

Reminds me of years back while visiting my dad in Sidney Nebraska. The city was having an auction to get rid of old equipment and vehicles so we went to have a look just for grins. In the line up was a JD hit and miss still in the crate. They had purchased it back in the day and never used it. Brought crazy money. Once in a lifetime find.

"Not so many going to the scrap iron guys anymore, collectors got them."

And the scrap metal thieves are stealing them from the collectors, to sell for scrap metal.

It would take more than 5 hp to run a saw mill.5 hp was common on cord wood saws. My Dad brought home a few small engines of that type and got them running.Still a lot of interest by collectors now.Farm tractors with belt pulleys replaced the big engines.
