I have a int. 986 will I was doing some mowing I hit something and my slip clutch didn"t slip so it snapped my PTO shaft off, just wondering how hard it to replace, we have a great shop on our farm so tools and man power is there, thanks

PTO is easy enough to get out. Just drian the oil and use all 3 plugs or it will drain for a long time through the bearings on the bull gears.
I have never had a PTO unit apart on and Ih always just took it in to the dealer and had them back in a day or so.

Thanks, we're going to wait until this weekend to tackle it, seems like a pretty straight forward deal, other than it being the size of a VW motor! Gotta love big tractors, again thanks

Easy to get the entire PTO out of a IH 986. Drain the hydraulic oil. Just remove it as an entire assembly. There is a row of bolts that hold it to the tractor. I usually use an engine hoist on a bolt close to the top. Then a 4 foot piece of pipe over the PTO shaft. The pump/clutch hangs out toward the front. So this makes it want to tip forward. You need the pipe to tip it back or you can break the suction tube. Pull it back a little and then start to tip it as soon as you can the suction tube is lower the housing at the back.

The pump, clutch, piston and all comes out as an entire unit. They are fairly easy to work on. I would go through it while I had it apart. The parts are not that high.

Here is a link to a post about how to repair the unit.

You don't even have to drain any oil. Just put the rear up on some blocks or up an a knoll. The transmission level will be far enough below the pto unit to pull it without oil loss.

I had just fixed a PTO shaft on my mini mo, it had broke at the flywheel so I had to split the tractor to get the broken piece out. I could find a replacement for it so I bought some spline that was the same and took it to a machine shop to get it welded up...

Thanks guys this is the 1st time Ive ever posted a question, and have gotten some great advice
