John Deere 420 Project Mistake

I bought this old John Deere 420 project and now I am waking up to my big mistake. Now this thing does run but not too great. Maybe it is because the gas tank had some 5 year old fuel in it or maybe it was because the tractor had not been started for 4 or 5 years.
Now the crankcase did have good looking oil in it, in fact it had several gallons of oil so I know the crank was well lubed.

The three point and pto seem to work OK but the previous owner seemed to believe more oil is better because the tranny and the rear end are over full. Better than no oil I guess.

No fenders but good rear tires. No seat cushions and no power steering. Now that I think about it those JD junkies will think it is just the perfect tractor. Not good for much but it is green. I will get it running and put a "for sale" sign on it and soon another JD guy will get his fix. Tractor is here in NNY near the border with the British Colony.

Unless you paid way too much for it the JD 420 should sell easily. They are still selling well around here. The fact they they are smaller and have a three point make them a more popular collector tractor than the older JD 2 cylinders. They can be used for three point work and are easier to haul.

Also drain that old gas and put some fresh in it. That could make the world of difference on how it runs. You can blend the old gas into your car/pickup gas and they will burn it without any issues.

That's what I thought when I parked my old 1020 out by the road this spring too. The brain dead dolts who stopped every two minutes didn't know a John Deere 1020 from a porta potty.

Advertise it in the right places I guess.

rrlund: A JD 1020 is not a real collectible tractor. They are still too new for the collectors to really look at. Plus the Mannheim designed tractors just are not collected very much right now.

2badlybent's JD 420 will have a different set of buyers.

I wasn't trying to sell it as a collector. It has a loader on it. If somebody saw a 1010 or a 2010 sitting somewhere, they'd get all uppity and say things like "WELL,there's one over by" someplace that didn't matter,"and that's $500 less".

What is your mistake? You bought a project tractor . Sounds like the former owner did you a favor. I would much rather drain oil then pound pistons out.

Your point is ? Sounds like minor issues thus far. We"re you planning on waxing the paint and flipping the tractor to make an easy $1000 ?
Think you got it bad? I just busted the nose cone on my 435 while running the rotary cutter. Hooked a stump and swung the front end of the tractor into a tree.
Does the 420 have live pto, 5speed, float ride, swept back axles, which chassis, scv, dual rockshaft, slant steer?
