OT: Yosemite Rim Fire

Poor pilot, cant get away from his back seat driver wife. From the 4:00 minute mark to the end, she tells about his "landing gear" at least 20 times. :) :)

On a serious note, that is one HUGE fire. Hope they get it under control soon.

Very sad and dangerous but you got to be impressed at natures fury.Starting at 2:09 till 2:16 check the upper left in the frame .Kinda spokey.

About a fourth of the way through the video in the smoke in the upper left hand corner of the picture there is the shape of a face looking down on the fire. Marilyn said it looks like god looking down on the fire.

A few years ago we were combining wheat just off the north end of the airport by Pocatello Idaho when the water bombers were taking off and landing. When one of those four engine planes was taking off over the combine the whole machine would rumble and vibrate. It felt like the combine was self destructing, then there was a sudden shadow and a huge object coming over from behind. It took awhile for the pulse to settle down after it was all over. Jim

The woman voice was the plane's warning system telling him his landing gear was down. I have seen pilots do this to help them drop air speed while still keeping the engine speed up. They can retract the landing gear an gain air speed fast that way. It almost feels like letting go of an anchor.

Lots of pilots would do this when they dropped us out on a small target.

Sure sounds like some military experience there somewhere. All about getting it where it does the most good, just like dropping bombs. Sure was a good video. Thanks

I was thinking the warning system was telling him the landing gear was NOT down. If you notice he is losing altitude as he comes in for the drop and is very close to the top of some of the hills.
As soon as the drop is made and he starts gaining altitude the warning devise shuts up.

But as you explain it that does make sense. He lifted the landing gear after the drop to gain speed and that turned off the warning devise.

I have seen one video that explained newer air drop planes that have variable pitch props to combat slower speeds needed to load and unload.

The thing that caught my eye in this video is how far he is from the fire. I expected the drop to be right on the fire line. In other words smothering the fire rather than creating a fire break line.

If he was too low I'd think a voice would come on telling him to pull up. I've been in only three small planes where I sat with the pilot and all three of them had that voice command telling the pilot to pull up when they were landing. Do all planes have that command voice telling them to pull up? Jim

No, it's an industry standard called GPWS or Ground Proximity Warning System, Big guys have it, but unfortunately, very expensive and most small private aircraft don't have the space or weight capacity even if the owner had the dollars to install it.

The "landing gear" warning was telling him his gear was NOT down. He had his flaps set to a setting for landing (flaps 100 I believe he called) which allows him to slow down and get extra lift, and the landing gear warning system thinks he is about to land. On everything I've flown the only way to cancel it is to put the gear down, something he wouldn't want to do because of the extra drag so he just has to ignore it until he begins to retract his flaps.

Be interested to know exactly what type aircraft this is.

I am with you JD, I spend may hours a year in a helicopter. That's what the smiley faces were for. Showing that the poor guy cannot escape his wife even while flying.

Randy figured it out.
